Suryakumar Yadav Brings T20 World Cup Trophy to Historic Adalaj Stepwell After India’s Triumph
Crowds gather at Gujarat heritage site as fans celebrate India’s record-breaking win over New Zealand in Ahmedabad
Gandhinagar— A day after leading India to a historic T20 World Cup victory, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav visited the iconic Adalaj Stepwell in Gujarat on Monday, carrying the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup trophy and drawing large crowds of enthusiastic cricket fans.
The centuries-old monument near Gandhinagar witnessed a festive atmosphere as hundreds of people gathered around the stepwell complex and nearby roads to catch a glimpse of the Indian skipper holding the coveted trophy. Some fans climbed terraces overlooking the site, chanting “India, India” as Yadav arrived.
Local authorities deployed police personnel around the heritage monument to manage the crowd and ensure security during the visit.
India clinched the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title on Sunday with a commanding 96-run victory over the New Zealand national cricket team in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Playing before a packed crowd at the world’s largest cricket stadium, India posted a formidable 255 for five in 20 overs after being put in to bat. Sanju Samson led the charge with 89 off 46 balls, while Abhishek Sharma smashed 52 from just 21 deliveries and Ishan Kishan added 54 from 25 balls. The total became the highest score ever recorded in a men’s T20 World Cup final.
In response, New Zealand, captained by Mitchell Santner, were bowled out for 159 in 19 overs. Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah delivered a match-winning spell, taking four wickets for just 15 runs, while Axar Patel claimed three wickets to seal a dominant victory for India.
Reflecting on the triumph, Yadav said the magnitude of the moment would take time to fully sink in.
“It will take some time to understand this moment. It has been a long journey, and I am very happy. After 2024, the BCCI and its secretary, Jay Shah, showed their faith in me. Winning the trophy at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is a special feeling,” he said.
Following the victory, Yadav, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir, and International Cricket Council chairman Jay Shah also visited a Hanuman temple in Ahmedabad to offer prayers with the trophy.
The Adalaj Stepwell, known for its intricate carvings and Indo-Islamic architectural design, is one of Gujarat’s prominent tourist attractions and a well-known heritage site in the region.
