India, England Set for Third Straight T20 World Cup Semifinal Showdown

MUMBAI — India and England will meet in the semifinals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup for the third consecutive edition on Thursday, with both teams chasing a place in the final and the chance to become the first nation to win the tournament three times.
The two cricket powerhouses have each won the T20 World Cup twice and have split their previous semifinal meetings. Notably, the winner of their semifinal clash has gone on to lift the trophy both times.
England defeated India by 10 wickets in the semifinal of the 2022 tournament before beating Pakistan by five wickets in the final to claim their second title. India turned the tables in 2024, defeating England in the semifinal before edging South Africa in a tense final to secure their second championship.
Now the rivals meet again, this time at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, with both teams seeking another shot at history.
India holds the edge in the overall head-to-head record, winning 17 of their 29 T20 matches against England, which has won 12. The hosts are also aiming to become the first country to successfully defend the T20 World Cup title and the first host nation to win the tournament.
The two teams reached the semifinals through different paths. England secured a spot early after finishing unbeaten in Group 2 of the Super 8 stage with five straight victories. India, meanwhile, lost to South Africa during the same stage and became the final team to qualify after a last-gasp win over the West Indies in a must-win match.
Earlier in the tournament’s league stage, India topped Group A with an undefeated record, while England lost to the West Indies and finished second in Pool C.
Despite their inconsistent path to the semifinals, India has relied on contributions from multiple players throughout the tournament.
Opener Abhishek Sharma showed signs of returning to form with his first half-century of the tournament, while Sanju Samson emerged as a key figure in India’s last match, scoring an unbeaten 97 to guide the team past the West Indies.
Captain Suryakumar Yadav has been India’s leading run-scorer with 231 runs in seven matches, followed closely by Ishan Kishan with 217. Suryakumar also delivered a crucial 84 in the opening match against the United States.
Other players including Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya have made important contributions when needed, giving India a balanced lineup heading into the semifinal.
India’s bowling attack has also been effective, with Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakravarthy, Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav sharing the workload. Chakravarthy leads the team with 12 wickets so far in the tournament.
England, too, has relied on a collective effort to reach the last four.
Phil Salt, Jacob Bethell, Will Jacks and captain Harry Brook have provided key contributions with the bat, though star batter Jos Buttler has struggled to find his usual explosive form. Brook is England’s leading scorer in the tournament with 228 runs.
Spinner Adil Rashid has been England’s most successful bowler with 11 wickets, while Liam Dawson and Jofra Archer have each taken 10. All-rounder Will Jacks has also chipped in with the ball as a backup spinner.
The pitch at Wankhede is expected to offer early assistance to seam bowlers before becoming more favorable for batting. Weather forecasts call for hot and sunny conditions with temperatures in the upper 90s Fahrenheit and little chance of rain. Dew later in the evening could influence the toss, with the winning captain likely to choose to bowl first.
Both teams appear settled after seven matches in the tournament and are unlikely to make changes to their lineups unless forced by injury or other circumstances. For India, Samson is expected to retain his place after his match-winning performance in the previous game.
More than 35,000 fans are expected to pack the Wankhede stands, creating a charged atmosphere as the hosts look to ride strong home support in pursuit of another World Cup final appearance.
