Detroit — Four golfers of Indian origin have secured places in the 2026 FedExCup Playoffs, marking the first time that Akshay Bhatia, Aaron Rai, Sahith Theegala and Sudarshan Yellamaraju will compete together in the PGA Tour postseason.
All four are safely inside the top 70 of the FedExCup standings ahead of this week’s Wyndham Championship, the final tournament of the regular season.
Bhatia is the highest-ranked member of the group, sitting 14th with 1,723 points. Rai is 35th with 1,114 points, followed by Theegala in 43rd with 883 and Yellamaraju in 54th with 737.
Their positions guarantee entry into the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, which opens the three-event playoff series on Aug. 13. Rai and Theegala are scheduled to compete at the Wyndham Championship, where they can improve their seeding before the postseason.
The four-player contingent reflects the increasing presence of Indian-origin golfers at the highest level of the sport.
Bhatia has enjoyed one of the strongest seasons of his career, highlighted by a victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The left-handed American has remained among the FedExCup leaders through a series of consistent performances and enters the playoffs with a strong chance of advancing deep into the postseason.
Rai, an English golfer of Indian heritage, also reached a major career milestone this season by winning the PGA Championship. Known for his accuracy and ball-striking, he will begin the playoffs in position to challenge for one of the 30 spots in the season-ending Tour Championship.
Theegala has returned to form after injuries disrupted his 2025 campaign. The California native produced several high finishes during the regular season and reestablished himself among the Tour’s leading young players.
Yellamaraju, a 24-year-old Canadian rookie, earned his playoff berth through steady results during his first full PGA Tour season. His place among the top 70 represents a notable achievement in a debut campaign.
Scottie Scheffler leads the FedExCup standings entering the Wyndham Championship. Matt Fitzpatrick, Cameron Young, Wyndham Clark and Chris Gotterup complete the top five, while Rory McIlroy is 12th.
The final qualifying places remain unsettled. Jackson Koivun holds the 70th and last playoff position, with Mac Meissner and Keegan Bradley immediately behind him. Former FedExCup champion Tony Finau is 89th and will need a strong result at the Wyndham Championship to keep his season alive.
After the opening playoff event in Memphis, the field will be reduced from 70 players to 50 for the BMW Championship. Those who advance will also qualify for the PGA Tour’s lucrative Signature Events in 2027.
Only the top 30 will move on to the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club, where the FedExCup champion will be decided. The postseason finale has a $40 million bonus pool, including $10 million for the winner.
Regardless of how far they advance, the participation of Bhatia, Rai, Theegala and Yellamaraju will make the 2026 playoffs a landmark moment for golfers of Indian heritage. (Source: IANS)
