EDISON, NJ— Diwali celebrations turned into an act of community service this past weekend as the non-profit organization Save Indian Farmers (SIF) hosted its annual “Diwali Dhamaka” Mela on Saturday, October 11. The full-day cultural and fundraising event, held in Edison, NJ, attracted hundreds and far exceeded its fundraising goals to support Indian farmers recently devastated by floods.

The event was a vibrant fusion of tradition, entertainment, and philanthropy, as attendees gathered not only to celebrate the Festival of Lights but also to stand in solidarity with farming communities in India facing crisis.

Event Highlights

Fundraising Milestone:
SIF reported that the event raised a significant amount of funds, which will be directly deployed to provide relief and rehabilitation support for flood-affected farmers across India.

Cultural Extravaganza:
More than 25 live performances lit up the stage throughout the day, featuring a dynamic mix of Bollywood and classical dance, vocal and instrumental music, and a crowd-favorite Mallakhamb demonstration—a traditional Indian sport that blends gymnastics and aerial yoga on a vertical pole.

Theatre with a Message:
A standout moment came with the gripping street play “Swarg Me Kisan” performed by the Prayog Theater Group. The performance offered a poignant commentary on the struggles of farmers in India, drawing emotional responses and reinforcing the urgency of the cause.

Festive Bazaar & Family Fun:
Over 15 vendors showcased a colorful array of Indian food, clothing, jewelry, and festive goods. DIY stations for children, including diya painting, rangoli art, and paper lantern decoration, made it a true family-friendly celebration.

Through initiatives focused on disaster relief, sustainable farming, and educational outreach, SIF works to combat the deep-rooted challenges faced by India’s farmers—challenges made worse by natural disasters, climate change, and economic instability.
