BOSTON–The medical and Indian-American communities are mourning the loss of Dr. Yogeshwar Dayal, a respected physician, educator, researcher, and philanthropist, who passed away peacefully this week. Remembered for his professional excellence, intellectual curiosity, generosity of spirit, and engaging personality, Dr. Dayal leaves behind a legacy that spans medicine, education, and community service.
A board-certified pathologist who spent decades advancing patient care and medical education, Dr. Dayal was widely admired by colleagues, students, friends, and family alike. His passing marks the end of an extraordinary life dedicated to healing, teaching, scholarship, and service.
Born in India, Dr. Dayal graduated from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, in 1961. Following medical school, he pursued advanced training in pathology at AIIMS, where he developed the academic rigor and commitment to excellence that would characterize his professional life. During the years that followed, he continued his medical training and professional development in India before embarking on the next chapter of his career in the United States.
In 1968, Dr. Dayal moved to the United States with his wife, Shyama, and family to pursue further specialization and academic opportunities. He completed a Transitional Year internship at Memorial Hospital in Worcester, Massachusetts, from 1968 to 1969, followed by residency training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Beth Israel Hospital and Harvard Medical School from 1969 to 1970.
These formative experiences established the foundation for a distinguished career in academic medicine. Dr. Dayal subsequently joined the staff of New England Medical Center and the faculty of Tufts University School of Medicine, where he would serve for more than three decades. Throughout his career, he was deeply involved in patient care, diagnostic pathology, medical research, and the education of generations of medical students, residents, and fellows.
An accomplished scholar and educator, Dr. Dayal authored and co-authored numerous scientific publications, book chapters, and academic texts. He was widely respected for his expertise in pathology and his dedication to advancing medical knowledge. He also served as a member and leader of several regional, national, and international professional organizations, contributing to the broader scientific community throughout his career.
Colleagues often remarked on Dr. Dayal’s unique ability to combine intellectual rigor with warmth and humanity. Students valued him as a gifted teacher and mentor, while friends appreciated his thoughtful perspective, quick wit, and engaging conversation.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Dayal was known for his wisdom, articulate humor, love of music, and remarkable singing voice. He had a gift for bringing people together and enriching every gathering with his insights, stories, and good cheer. He also contributed to Vision-Aid and served on its leadership team.
“Dr. Dayal was a highly accomplished physician, teacher, and community leader, but above all, he was a cherished friend,” said Dr. Om Ganda, a longtime associate, on his Facebook post. “His wisdom, humor, generosity, and ability to connect with people will be deeply missed.”
Following his retirement from professional practice in 2017, Dr. Dayal remained actively engaged in community and charitable initiatives. A devoted supporter of VisionAid, he generously contributed his time, counsel, and encouragement to further the organization’s mission of serving individuals with visual impairments and empowering communities through service.
Friends and colleagues describe Dr. Dayal as a rare combination of accomplished physician, gifted teacher, thoughtful mentor, devoted husband and family man, and beloved community member. His influence extended far beyond hospital corridors and lecture halls, touching countless lives through his kindness, mentorship, friendship, and example.
Dr. Dayal’s legacy lives on through the many patients he served, the students he trained, the colleagues he inspired, and the family and friends who were privileged to know him. He will be remembered not only for his extraordinary professional achievements, but also for the humanity, grace, humor, and compassion that defined his life.
