NEW DELHI, India — India and Canada are looking to deepen economic cooperation as Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met with Canada’s Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu on Thursday to discuss ways to expand bilateral trade and boost investment flows.
Sidhu is in India to advance commercial ties and identify new areas for partnership. The visit comes as both nations work to strengthen economic engagement under the New Roadmap 2025.
Goyal, in a post on X, said it was “a pleasure” to co-chair the seventh India-Canada Ministerial Dialogue on Trade and Investment with Sidhu. He noted that the meeting focused on enhancing trade, promoting investment, and broadening cooperation across priority sectors.
Canada is positioning the visit as an effort to reinforce its commitment to diversifying trade relationships and attracting new investment opportunities. According to an official statement, Sidhu aims to highlight Canada’s interest in sectors such as artificial intelligence, clean technology, and digital industries during his visit.
“This visit to India will reinforce Canada’s commitment to diversifying our trade relationships and attracting new investment,” Sidhu said in the statement. “As one of the fastest-growing major economies, India offers significant opportunities for Canadian businesses and workers. Our commercial ties continue to expand — bilateral trade surpassed $30 billion in 2024 — and there is even greater potential ahead.”
India was Canada’s seventh-largest goods and services trading partner in 2024, with two-way trade reaching $30.9 billion. Ottawa views India as a key partner in its broader Indo-Pacific strategy.
On the sidelines of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Niagara, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand to discuss cooperation in areas including trade, energy, and security. Jaishankar welcomed progress under the New Roadmap 2025 and expressed optimism about rebuilding a stronger partnership after recent diplomatic tensions. (Source: IANS)
