India, U.S. Army Chiefs Meet in Hawaii to Strengthen Indo-Pacific Defense Ties

WASHINGTON — India’s Chief of Army Staff, General Upendra Dwivedi, met with senior U.S. Army leaders in Hawaii as part of an official visit focused on expanding defense cooperation and reinforcing stability across the Indo-Pacific region.

Dwivedi held talks in Honolulu with U.S. Army Pacific Commanding General Ronald P. Clark and other senior officials, with discussions centered on deepening military ties and advancing a shared vision of a free and stable Indo-Pacific.

Upon arrival at Fort Shafter, the headquarters of U.S. Army Pacific, Dwivedi was welcomed with a formal Guard of Honor. He also conducted an aerial tour of Oahu, where he was briefed on training operations and multi-domain military readiness across the island.

The visit comes amid a broader push by both nations to strengthen strategic defense collaboration as regional security dynamics evolve.

Earlier this month, India and the United States reaffirmed their defense partnership during high-level meetings between their respective air force chiefs. The discussions emphasized improving interoperability, expanding joint training, and enhancing deterrence capabilities in the Indo-Pacific.

U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff General Kenneth Wilsbach hosted Indian Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh during a visit to Washington on April 8. Singh received a full honors welcome at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling before holding meetings at the Pentagon with senior U.S. defense officials, including Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink.

U.S. officials described the defense relationship with India as a key pillar in maintaining a “free, open, peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.”

Wilsbach praised India’s growing role in multinational military exercises and said expanding such cooperation would be critical to strengthening regional deterrence.

“It was an honor to host Air Chief Marshal AP Singh for this important counterpart visit,” Wilsbach said. “We had great discussions focused on modernization efforts, future training opportunities and our shared commitment to a free, open and prosperous Indo-Pacific.”

The talks also addressed India’s acquisition of MQ-9B SkyGuardian drones, with U.S. officials highlighting efforts to ensure the Indian military can effectively deploy the platform once delivered.

Additional discussions covered collaboration through programs such as the National Guard Bureau’s State Partnership Program, advanced airlift training, and expanded unmanned aerial operations.

Singh said the engagements are vital to improving joint capabilities between the two air forces.

“Opportunities like this are crucial for building our joint interoperability and strengthening the strategic partnership between our air forces,” he said.

During his visit, Singh also traveled to Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado for briefings on North American aerospace and maritime defense operations, and to Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, where he visited the U.S. Air Force Warfare Center and participated in a familiarization flight aboard an F-15EX Eagle II.

The recent high-level exchanges underscore growing defense coordination between India and the United States as both countries seek to bolster security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. (Source: IANS)
