Piyush Goyal Likely to Visit U.S. in September, May Meet Trade Representative Jamieson Greer
New Delhi — Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is likely to travel to the United States in late September for the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting, a visit that could take on added significance as India and the U.S. seek to resolve outstanding issues in bilateral trade negotiations.
Goyal is also expected to meet U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on the sidelines of the G20 meeting, according to a report by NDTV Profit.
The meeting could give both sides an opportunity to review progress and narrow remaining differences as they work toward a bilateral trade agreement.
India and the U.S. have been negotiating over issues including tariffs, market access and other barriers affecting trade in goods and services. Both countries are seeking terms that address their commercial priorities while creating additional opportunities for businesses.
India has been pushing for greater access to the U.S. market, particularly for sectors with strong export potential, while Washington has sought improved access for American goods and services in India.
A meeting between Goyal and Greer could help determine whether the two sides are able to resolve key areas of disagreement and move closer to a final agreement.
The G20 gathering will also give Goyal an opportunity to meet trade ministers from other major economies and discuss broader issues affecting global commerce.
The expected September visit comes as New Delhi and Washington continue efforts to advance negotiations on the proposed trade pact. Progress during the talks could provide greater clarity on the timing and scope of a final agreement.
