Atlanta — Indian American golfer Akshay Bhatia will look to finish his PGA Tour season on a strong note as the top 30 players in the FedEx Cup standings gather at East Lake Golf Club for the season-ending Tour Championship.
Bhatia earned his place in the 30-player field after finishing tied for 12th at the BMW Championship in St. Louis. His steady performance throughout the playoffs kept him inside the qualification cutoff and secured his first appearance in the Tour Championship.
The tournament will be played from Aug. 27 to 30 and features a $40 million purse.
The 24-year-old Bhatia has emerged as one of the PGA Tour’s leading young players, with three career victories. His left-handed swing, iron play and putting have helped him establish himself as a consistent contender against strong fields.
Much of the attention at East Lake will be focused on World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and two-time defending champion Rory McIlroy.
Scheffler enters the finale at the top of the FedEx Cup standings after another season of consistent performances, while McIlroy arrives following a runner-up finish at the BMW Championship.
McIlroy challenged Wyndham Clark deep into the final round at Bellerive Country Club before Clark held on for the victory.
Clark will carry significant momentum into Atlanta after winning the BMW Championship with back-to-back 6-under 64s. The victory earned him 750 FedEx Cup points and moved him sharply up the standings ahead of the season finale.
While Scheffler, McIlroy and Clark are expected to be among the leading contenders, Bhatia’s qualification represents another milestone in a career that has progressed rapidly since he turned professional.
East Lake is expected to place a premium on precision and patience, with the pressure of the FedEx Cup finale adding significance to every shot. Bhatia’s ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities and remain composed could determine whether he can challenge the leaders.
