Sonia Gandhi Discharged From Hospital After Recovering From Infection

NEW DELHI — Senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi was discharged from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on Tuesday morning after recovering from a systemic infection, hospital officials said.
Gandhi had been admitted late on March 24 with a fever and was treated with antibiotics under the supervision of a team of senior doctors.
“She has now recovered and has been discharged this morning. She will continue her treatment and follow-up at home,” the hospital said in a statement.
Dr. Ajay Swaroop, chairman of the hospital, said Gandhi responded well to treatment provided by a medical team that included Dr. D. S. Rana, Dr. S. Nundy, and Dr. Arup Basu.
Her hospitalization prompted changes to Congress party plans. Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, canceled a scheduled visit to Kerala on March 25, where he was expected to launch the party’s campaign for upcoming elections. Party president Mallikarjun Kharge attended the event in his place.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, a Member of Parliament from Wayanad, also visited the hospital during her mother’s stay.
This marks the second time this year that Gandhi has been admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. She previously sought treatment there on January 5 for respiratory discomfort and was discharged a few days later.
Gandhi, who turned 79 in December, remains one of the most senior leaders in the Congress party.
Shortly before her hospitalization, she had criticized the central government over its response to the reported assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, calling its stance an abdication rather than neutrality. (Source: IANS)
