Amanda Seyfried Celebrates Rise of Female Audiences as Women-Led Films Score Big
Los Angeles— Amanda Seyfried is applauding the growing wave of women turning out for films centered on strong female characters, saying recent successes prove that stories made for women are resonating powerfully at the box office.
The actress wrapped up a busy end to 2025 with the back-to-back releases of The Testament of Ann Lee and The Housemaid — two films she describes as “vastly different,” yet united by their focus on complex, resilient women.
Speaking at a press conference during the Berlin International Film Festival ahead of the Special Gala screening of The Testament of Ann Lee, Seyfried reflected on how she chooses projects and why these two films felt especially meaningful.
“I think about, what’s worth leaving my kids for? And what’s going to give me the opportunity as an artist to flex myself and to learn something about myself?” she said. “This particular project had quality all over it. What I define as quality is a clear vision — not necessarily a message — but an exploration of someone’s life through storytelling in a cinematic atmosphere with a real edge.”
While she was not directly asked about politics, Seyfried was questioned about the importance of quality filmmaking “in these times when fascism is rising everywhere.” Her response focused on artistic integrity and meaningful storytelling rather than overt messaging.
Two Films, One Theme: Strength
In The Housemaid, directed by Paul Feig and co-starring Sydney Sweeney, Seyfried takes on a role in an erotic thriller that has emerged as a box office hit. Though stylistically different from the musical drama The Testament of Ann Lee, she said the experience was equally rewarding.
“It was also incredibly fun and let me flex myself and my artistic needs,” she said. “Not in the same way necessarily, but it was very fruitful for me personally.”
Despite their tonal differences, Seyfried sees a powerful common thread between the two projects.
“I love the fact that they’re both about strength of character — women with needs and who are activated by those needs and by the need for equality and safety in the world,” she said.
A Shift in the Audience
Seyfried’s comments come amid a broader industry trend: female audiences are increasingly driving ticket sales for films featuring multidimensional women at the center of the narrative.
Her recent successes suggest that investing in women-led stories is not only creatively fulfilling but commercially viable. For Seyfried, that combination is both validating and energizing.
As Hollywood continues to debate representation and shifting audience dynamics, Seyfried’s message is clear — films made with strong women at their core are not niche projects. They are drawing crowds, sparking conversations, and proving that audiences are eager for stories that reflect their strength and complexity. (Source: IANS)
