Police Book 29 Social Media Accounts Over Fake Images of Actress Rukmini Vasanth

BENGALURU, Karnataka — Bengaluru Cyber Crime Police have registered a case against 29 social media accounts accused of circulating fake videos and photographs of actress Rukmini Vasanth, officials said Tuesday.

The case involves nine Instagram accounts, 14 X accounts and six Facebook pages, according to police.

Vasanth, who gained wider attention for her role in “Kantara Chapter 2,” recently filed a complaint at the Bengaluru Cyber Crime Police Station. She alleged that fake visuals had been created using artificial intelligence and deepfake technology by superimposing her face onto another person’s body.

In her complaint, the actress said the fabricated content caused her severe embarrassment and was a deliberate attempt to damage her reputation and character.

Police registered the case under Sections 66C and 66D of the Information Technology Act, along with Sections 75(3), 79, 336, 356, 351, 352 and 294 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. An investigation is underway.

Vasanth had earlier responded publicly after AI-generated images and videos falsely claiming to show her circulated on social media. She said the content was fake and urged people not to misuse AI for harmful purposes.

“My team and I have come across certain AI-generated images being circulated online claiming to be me. I want to state clearly that these images are entirely fake and fabricated. The creation and circulation of such manipulated content is deeply irresponsible and a serious violation of privacy,” Vasanth said on Instagram.

The actress said legal and cybercrime action was being initiated against those responsible.

“We are taking this matter seriously and initiating the necessary legal and cybercrime action against those involved in creating and spreading these images. Requesting everyone to refrain from sharing or engaging with such content,” she said.

Speaking to reporters at a private event in Bengaluru, Vasanth said she had already filed a complaint with cyber police and believed authorities would take strict action.

“AI should be used for good purposes and not for harmful activities. Not just actresses, but many other women are also facing problems because of this. I believe the police will take action in this matter,” she said.

Vasanth also reiterated that the viral video was not her and warned that legal action would be pursued against those involved in circulating the fake content. She appealed to the public not to share fabricated material on social media.

Rukmini Vasanth is the daughter of late Indian Army officer Col. Vasanth Venugopal and Bharatanatyam dancer Subhashini Vasanth. Col. Vasanth was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime military decoration, for bravery during an operation against militants in the Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir in 2007.
