India Appoints Dinesh Trivedi as High Commissioner to Bangladesh

NEW DELHI — Former Union Minister Dinesh Trivedi has been appointed as India’s next High Commissioner to Bangladesh, the Ministry of External Affairs announced, as both countries work to reset strained bilateral ties.
Trivedi, who previously served as Railway Minister in 2011 and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, is expected to assume his new role shortly.
“Shri Dinesh Trivedi has been appointed as the next High Commissioner of India to the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. He is expected to take up the assignment shortly,” the ministry said in a statement.
His appointment comes amid renewed diplomatic engagement between New Delhi and Dhaka. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently met Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and his delegation in New Delhi to discuss bilateral relations as well as regional and global developments.
“We discussed strengthening our bilateral relationship in its various facets. Also exchanged views on regional and global developments. Agreed to remain in close touch,” Jaishankar said in a post on X after the meeting.
Rahman’s visit marked the first trip to India by a Bangladeshi minister since the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led government took office in February, signaling a potential shift in ties after a period of strain during the 18-month tenure of an interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. That period was marked by rising tensions, including concerns over attacks on Hindu minorities and anti-India rhetoric.
Earlier this month, India’s outgoing High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pranay Verma, met with Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation across key sectors. During the meeting, Verma emphasized India’s commitment to a “positive, constructive and forward-looking approach” based on shared interests and mutual benefit.
In February, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla visited Bangladesh to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new government and met Prime Minister Rahman, extending his congratulations on assuming office. (Source: IANS)
