Prithviraj’s ‘Khalifa’ Trailer Promises a Grim Crime Drama Packed With Revenge and Action
Vysakh’s upcoming thriller follows Aamir Ali, a man caught between political rivals, smugglers and a legacy that refuses to stay buried

CHENNAI, Aug 17 (IANS) — The makers of director Vysakh’s much-awaited crime drama “Khalifa”, starring Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead, have unveiled the film’s hard-hitting trailer, offering a glimpse of a dark world of smuggling, political rivalry and revenge.
Sharing the trailer on Instagram, Prithviraj wrote: “Presenting the #KHALIFA trailer. This Onam..A legacy awakens! In theatres worldwide from 20th August 2026!”
The trailer opens with a reference to COFEPOSA, the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act, immediately establishing the film’s crime and smuggling backdrop.
Actor Indrans is seen saying, “That is the story they are going with,” before the narrative begins to reveal the legacy of Prithviraj’s character, Aamir Ali.
An officer describes Ali as the heir to a notorious legacy, saying that laws such as COFEPOSA were specifically drafted to deal with the notorious smuggler associated with his past.
But Ali’s troubles extend beyond the law.
The trailer shows him caught in a web involving politicians, powerful adversaries and rival figures in the smuggling world. Shammi Thilakan plays Raghavan, a political rival who is determined to get to Ali, while Neil Nitin Mukesh appears as another powerful figure in the smuggling network.
Mukesh’s character warns against dealing with those who arrive with stolen gold, declaring: “The unwritten law between us is that we never entertain the dogs who turn up with snatched gold.”
What initially appears to be a crime drama gradually takes the shape of an intense revenge thriller as Ali decides to strike back at those who threaten him.
“I know my blood carries all the traits of a master smuggler. Go tell your old man not to fuel that fire,” Ali warns his rivals.
As the trailer progresses, Ali finds himself pushed into an increasingly precarious situation—one that his friends had hoped he would never encounter.
The final moments promise an escalation in the conflict, with Ali threatening his enemies over the return of the gold they have taken from him. The confrontation culminates in a warning involving a bomb, suggesting that the film will combine its crime narrative with large-scale action.
The trailer is packed with intense action sequences, gunfire, confrontations and high-stakes moments, positioning Khalifa as a major action entertainer for the Onam season.
The film’s shooting was wrapped up in June, with the production team travelling to Dubai earlier this year to film several important sequences.
The makers have previously revealed several characters in the film. Mohini plays Noorjahan, while Kyraa Vasudevan portrays Vyshanavi. Master Nafash plays Rushin, while Shammi Thilakan appears as Raghavan and Shine Varghese as Sudhip.
Prithviraj plays Aamir Ali, a character whose family legacy appears to be at the heart of the film’s conflict.
The actor had previously generated considerable interest around the film when he shared a younger-looking image of himself as Aamir on social media, captioning it, “AAMIR – The story that was…! #KHALIFA.”
He had also released a glimpse video of Khalifa on his birthday last year, describing the film as a revenge story shaped by a lineage spanning generations.
“A revenge forged by a lineage that spans generations! Next Onam.. Aamir Ali will write his vengeance in gold! #KHALIFA – The Ruler,” Prithviraj had said.
With its combination of crime, political intrigue, smuggling, family legacy and revenge, the trailer positions Khalifa as one of the major action releases of the Onam season. (Source: IANS)
