NEW DELHI– Exiled Bangladeshi author and human rights activist Taslima Nasreen has sharply criticized the Nobel Committee for awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to Muhammad Yunus, now serving as Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government. She accused him of fueling unrest in the country and damaging the credibility of the prestigious award.

Taking to social media platform X, Nasreen wrote, “Yunus has tarnished the reputation of the Nobel Prize. A man who spreads unrest has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. From now on, no one will have faith in the recipients of the Peace Prize. Instead, people will wonder whether the person is actually a bad one. The Nobel Committee seriously needs to reflect on this.”

This isn’t the first time Nasreen has taken aim at Yunus. On May 1, 2025, she publicly called for the withdrawal of his Nobel Prize, alleging widespread corruption, abuse of power, and human rights violations under his leadership. In a letter to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, she asked whether it was possible to revoke the award “under exceptional circumstances,” arguing that Yunus “has not done a single thing for peace.”

Nasreen accused Yunus of tax evasion during his tenure at Grameen Bank and alleged that he used foreign funds meant for the bank to build personal business ventures. She claimed that when women who took microloans failed to repay them with interest, Grameen Bank employees retaliated by demolishing their homes. “How can such a person be considered a symbol of peace?” she asked.

She also labeled Yunus an “agent of the defeated Pakistani army in 1971” and alleged that he seized power in Bangladesh with the help of jihadi militants. According to her, “In the last nine months, opposition leaders and minority Hindus have been killed on his orders. Their houses have been burned and destroyed. Many people have been wrongly imprisoned.”

Nasreen went further, claiming that Yunus is actively preparing for war with neighboring India. “Bangladesh has absolutely no capability to wage war against India, yet in his delusion he is pushing millions of people toward death,” she wrote. She added that terrorist attacks have shuttered industries, plunging the economy into crisis, yet Yunus remains indifferent and has no plans to hold elections. She alleged that his allies, including Pakistan, are exploiting Bangladesh’s resources while the country deteriorates.

In a final plea to the Nobel Committee, Nasreen wrote: “Muhammad Yunus is pushing Bangladesh into a terrible crisis economically, politically and socially. There is hatred and vengeance in his heart. His behavior is uncivilized, barbaric and cruel. He wants to kill the opposition. He has no desire to establish peace. In these nine months, there has not been peace in the country even for a single day — and he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Please set an example in favor of peace by taking back his Nobel Prize.” (Source: IANS)
