Killing of Khalistan Critic in Canada Sparks Outrage as Investigation Continues Without Arrests

OTTAWA — The killing of Nancy Grewal, a Canadian citizen and outspoken critic of the Khalistan movement, has raised concerns about extremist violence and intensified debate within Canada’s South Asian communities as police continue their investigation without making any arrests.

Grewal, 45, was fatally stabbed on March 3 in what police have described as a targeted attack. The case has drawn national attention as investigators examine possible links to Khalistani extremism amid longstanding tensions between India and Canada over the separatist issue.

According to a report by Khalsa Vox, new details that emerged between March 7 and March 9 have heightened scrutiny surrounding the killing, even as authorities say no suspects have been identified.

LaSalle Police, with assistance from the Ontario Provincial Police, reiterated on March 7 that the homicide on Todd Lane was a premeditated attack.

Chief Michael Pearce had earlier said investigators believe the killing was deliberate and directed specifically at Grewal.

Police have not announced any breakthroughs in identifying or apprehending suspects and have asked the public to come forward with information while declining to comment on speculation circulating online.

Canadian media reports, including those by CBC News cited in the Khalsa Vox report, said a social media account allegedly linked to Sikh extremists claimed responsibility for the killing.

According to the report, the post stated that Grewal was targeted because of her repeated criticism of the Khalistan separatist movement, which advocates for an independent Sikh homeland in India’s Punjab region. The message also warned that others who oppose the movement could face a similar fate.

Authorities have not verified the claim.

Shortly before her death, Grewal told CBC that she feared for her safety and had received threats from individuals connected to extremist elements within the separatist movement.

She described previous incidents including arson at her home and online harassment tied to videos she posted criticizing Khalistani ideology.

Family members say the attack appeared to be planned.

Her sister, Alishaa Grewal, described the killing as “pre-planned,” saying Grewal’s activism made her a target.

Reports say Grewal was stabbed multiple times while working alone as a personal support worker at a client’s home, a situation investigators believe may have made her vulnerable to an attack.

As the investigation continues with support from the Ontario Provincial Police, the absence of arrests has fueled speculation and anger among Grewal’s supporters.

They say her death underscores the dangers faced by those who publicly oppose Khalistani extremism in Canada and are calling for swift action to bring those responsible to justice. (Source: IANS)
