IMANE Announces Lineup of Speakers at its Annual Gala, to Elect President and New Committee

BURLINGTON, MA–The Indian Medical Association of New England, a non-profit organization for medical professionals of Indian origin in New England, announced the lineup of key speakers at its annual meeting that will also elect its new president and a new executive committee.

Serial medical technology entrepreneur Amar Sawhney will be the chief guest and keynote speaker at the gala, which will be held on Nov. 19 at Burlington Marriott Hotel in Burlington, MA.

Sawhney serves as President, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Board of Directors of Ocular Therapeutix. Previously, Sawhney served as CEO of Augmenix, an affiliate of Ocular Therapeutix, from 2008 until April 2014. In addition, he is a general partner of Incept, LLC, an intellectual property holding company. Earlier, Sawhney founded Confluent Surgical and served as its President and CEO prior to its acquisition by Covidien plc.

Sawhney also was a technology founder of Focal, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company acquired by Genzyme Corporation, and a founder of AccessClosure, Inc., acquired by Cardinal Health in 2014. Sawhney’s innovations are the subject of over 100 issued and pending patents. He holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, as well as a B.Tech. in chemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi India.

“We are truly honored that Amar Sawhney will grace the occasion with his keynote address and will be our Chief Guest at the IMANE’s 38th Annual Gala of the Year Awards gala,” said Dr. Sapna Aggarwal, President of IMANE, one of the oldest medical organizations of Indian doctors. “With about 150-plus guests, it is going to be a spectacular event. We are equally excited about Dr. Prem Shekar being our distinguished Guest for the gala. We are really looking forward to his address about his journey which is a source of inspiration for all of us. Dr Ajay Lodha is also our distinguished guest. He is President of American association of physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI).”

Dr. Shekar is a renowned cardiothoracic surgeon and chief of Division of Cardiac Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

Dr. Lodha specializes in internal medicine and is practicing at Jackson Heights, NY. He has graduated from the RN.T.  Medical College, University of Rajasthan. He is affiliated with Flushing Hospital Medical Center, New York-Presbyterian Queens, Queens Hospital Center and Wyckoff Heights Medical Center.

Among other things, the IMANE annual meeting will elects new office bearers and a new executive committee and will discuss the health care issues in the region and IMANE’s present and future contributions to the medical and public community, said Dr. Aggarwal.

Founded in 1978, IMANE is non-profit organization for medical professionals of Indian origin in New England. It provides medical education to the health care profession and has a strong presence in the community reaching out to those in need through the free health clinics, health screening and charity events.
