Boston Bhangra Celebrates 23 Years With Its Biggest Competition Yet — Now With Live Music
North America’s largest independent Indian dance competition returns to Dorchester November 14 with dancers, musicians and teams from across the continent.
BOSTON— Boston Bhangra, North America’s largest independent Indian dance competition, will return for its 23rd year on November 14, bringing teams from across North America to Boston for a celebration of Punjabi culture, music and dance. For the first time in the competition’s history, the event will also feature live musical performances alongside the dancers.
The Boston Bhangra Competition will take place at the Strand Theatre, 543 Columbia Road in Dorchester. The event will feature two competition divisions: one in which musicians perform live with the dancers and another featuring dancers accompanied by a dhol and a backing track.
Teams competing in this year’s event will be announced at a later date.
The addition of live music marks a new chapter for the annual competition. According to Boston Bhangra, the live-music division will be the only Bhangra competition in North America to feature live musical performances. Each live-music team will include a singer, a dhol performer and three to four additional musicians playing traditional Bhangra instruments, including tumbis, bugchus and chimptas.
“Adding live music makes this the most unique Bhangra competition in North America,” said Rohit Bhambi, founder of Boston Bhangra. “We are putting on a show that you can’t find anywhere else, as the top teams from across North America push themselves artistically to places we haven’t seen before.”
Bhangra is an upbeat folk dance style originating in Punjab, a region in northern India. Known for its energetic movements and vibrant costumes, the dance is traditionally performed to heavily percussive Punjabi music. Modern Bhangra competition performances combine athletic choreography, elaborate formations and traditional cultural elements.
Boston Bhangra was originally founded as a dance team in 2000. The organization has since evolved into a nonprofit dedicated to promoting cultural awareness through dance and music. Its programs include Bhangra classes and team performances, while its events bring dancers and talent from across the world to Boston.
The annual competition serves as the cornerstone of Boston Bhangra’s mission to celebrate Punjabi culture and contribute to Boston’s cultural community.
This year’s event will expand that mission by bringing musicians directly into the competition. The live performances will give participating teams another artistic element to incorporate into their choreography while highlighting the traditional instruments and musical styles associated with Bhangra.
