BOSTON– Renowned tabla player Zakir Hussain, who had first visited Boston in 1973, and has visited many times ever since, will present three unique programs in Boston this season, and all three will be very different from each other.
“They will be all three different types of musical performances,” Zakir Hussain told INDIA New England News in a telephone interview. “I am so fortunate to be part of all three programs.”
The first program will be held on Friday, March, March 23, 8:00 pm at Sanders Theatre located at 45 Quincy St., Cambridge, MA. He will be accompanied by renowned bansuri flutist Rakesh Chaurasia. The duo will perform a brilliant evening of Indian classical music.
One of the world’s most esteemed and influential musicians, Zakir Hussain is appreciated both in the field of percussion and for his genre-defying collaborations. Chaurasia, the nephew and protégé of flute maestro Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, incorporates the tradition of his uncle with his own personal style.
“Rakesh Chaurasia is the one of the greatest young flutists,” said Zakir Hussain. “He is the flutist of the future. I have very pleased to have him perform on the stage with me.”
The program is organized by World Music/CRASHarts.
Zakir Hussain’s second program– Alonzo King Lines Ballet With Zakir Hussain—will be held on April 20 at 8:00 pm at The Institute of Contemporary Art, located at 25 Harbor Shore Drive in Boston.
Visionary choreographer King actively develops bold original works with other artists from diverse disciplines and cultures. World Music/CRASHarts has commissioned Alonzo King LINES Ballet’s new collaboration with Zakir Hussain, who has composed music especially for this project and will perform the East Coast premiere on stage, with Sabir Khan playing sarangi.
The third and final program, called CrossCurrents, features Zakir Hussain, Dave Holland, Shankar Mahadevan, Chris Potter, and more, and will be held on May 3, 7:30 pm at Berklee Performance Center located at 136 Massachusetts Ave., Boston.
Led by Zakir Hussain and Grammy-winning jazz superstar bassist-composer Dave Holland, CrossCurrents showcases the long and vibrant relationship between jazz and Indian classical music, both of which have improvisation as a core tenet. The international supergroup also features Bollywood star vocalist Shankar Mahadevan, guitarist Sanjay Divecha, jazz pianist Louiz Banks, saxophonist Chris Potter, and drummer Gino Banks.
