Vivek Ramaswamy Loses Ohio Governor’s Race to Amy Acton After Controversial Campaign Ad Sparks Backlash
NEW YORK–Indian American entrepreneur and Republican politician Vivek Ramaswamy has lost Ohio’s gubernatorial election to Democrat Amy Acton, ending a heavily financed campaign that drew criticism over a controversial advertisement targeting his opponent’s childhood sexual abuse allegations.
Ramaswamy, a billionaire pharmaceutical entrepreneur and prominent supporter of President Donald Trump, conceded defeat following Tuesday’s election despite receiving endorsements from Trump and Vice President JD Vance.
The defeat represents a major political setback for Ramaswamy, who emerged as a national Republican figure during his unsuccessful bid for the party’s 2024 presidential nomination.
According to Forbes, Ramaswamy has an estimated net worth of approximately $2.2 billion. His gubernatorial campaign spent about $79 million, much of it from his personal fortune, as he traveled across Ohio, including aboard a private jet.
The campaign closely reflected Trump’s confrontational political style and emphasized the Make America Great Again movement’s priorities.
However, Ramaswamy’s standing against Acton, a physician and former Director of the Ohio Department of Health, weakened as the race progressed.
One of the most contentious episodes came when his campaign released an advertisement involving Acton’s estranged mother and allegations of sexual abuse during Acton’s childhood.
Acton had previously disclosed that she was sexually abused by her stepfather. A court eventually removed her from her mother’s custody and placed her with her father.
Her stepfather was charged with sexual abuse but fled Ohio and remained a fugitive until his death.
Ramaswamy’s campaign located Acton’s mother, who had maintained contact with her daughter for decades, and featured her in an advertisement defending her late husband and accusing Acton of lying about the abuse.
The advertisement immediately generated controversy, including criticism from members of Ramaswamy’s own party.
Although Trump and Vance supported the advertisement, several Republican leaders condemned the decision to use Acton’s childhood experiences as campaign material.
Ohio Republican Governor Mike DeWine was among those who publicly criticized the advertisement.
The controversy drew particular attention because the campaign appeared to give a platform to someone defending a man who had been charged with sexually abusing a child.
The backlash became a defining issue in the final stages of the election, as Acton’s campaign gained momentum.
Acton’s personal history also became a prominent part of her public profile. After being removed from an abusive household and placed with her father, she pursued higher education and eventually became a physician.
She later served as Ohio’s Health Director, gaining statewide recognition for her role in public health administration.
Her victory is particularly significant given Ohio’s recent Republican voting record.
Trump carried the state in the 2024 presidential election with approximately 55% of the vote, defeating Democrat Kamala Harris by about 12 percentage points.
Acton’s success in a state that strongly supported Trump marked a notable Democratic victory.
For Ramaswamy, the loss interrupts a rapid political ascent that began with his emergence as a wealthy biotechnology entrepreneur and conservative commentator.
Born in Cincinnati to Indian immigrant parents, Ramaswamy graduated from Harvard University before beginning his career in finance.
He initially worked at a hedge fund before establishing pharmaceutical businesses and an investment company, accumulating substantial wealth through his ventures.
His national political profile expanded during the 2024 Republican presidential primaries, when he challenged Trump for the nomination while promoting many of the same conservative policies.
After withdrawing from the race, Ramaswamy endorsed Trump and became one of his most outspoken allies.
Following Trump’s election victory, Ramaswamy was named alongside billionaire Elon Musk to lead the proposed Department of Government Efficiency, an initiative aimed at reducing federal spending and restructuring government operations.
However, Ramaswamy departed the initiative before Trump took office, choosing instead to pursue the Ohio governorship.
His campaign sought to capitalize on his business background, national recognition and close ties to the Trump administration.
Ramaswamy’s family roots are in Palakkad, Kerala. His father, V.G. Ramaswamy, immigrated to the United States and worked as an engineer and patent attorney for General Electric.
His mother, a psychiatrist, became a naturalized U.S. citizen, while his father retained his Indian citizenship.
Had Ramaswamy won, he would have become the third Indian American to serve as a U.S. state governor, following Republicans Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and Nikki Haley of South Carolina.
Instead, Acton’s victory leaves Ramaswamy facing questions about his political future after a costly campaign that failed to translate his national prominence, personal wealth and high-profile endorsements into a statewide electoral victory. (Source: IANS)
