Badshah Teams Up With Shreya Ghoshal for Romantic Single ‘Mahiya’ Featuring Avneet Kaur
MUMBAI–Rapper and music producer Badshah has collaborated with playback singer Shreya Ghoshal on a new romantic single titled “Mahiya,” featuring actress Avneet Kaur in a music video that combines contemporary musical arrangements with a visually elaborate love story.
The collaboration brings together Badshah’s hip-hop-influenced sound and Ghoshal’s melodic singing style, marking a new creative partnership between the two artists, who previously worked together as judges on the television singing competition “Indian Idol.”
Badshah described the recording experience as different from their interactions on the television show.
“Everyone knows Shreyaji as the queen of romance, and our camaraderie on the Indian Idol set has always been incredible. But taking that energy into the studio for this track was an entirely different experience,” he said in a statement.
“Mahiya” was written and composed by Badshah, with music production handled by Hiten. The upbeat romantic track incorporates elements of Badshah’s signature urban sound while highlighting Ghoshal’s vocals.
The rapper said the song explores the emotions associated with love, longing and celebration.
“‘Mahiya’ is the kind of song that stays with you long after the first listen. It holds a beautiful balance of longing, love and celebration. It truly feels like a crossover of two different musical universes coming together to tell a universal love story,” Badshah said.
The accompanying music video is directed by choreographers Piyush and Shazia, who have incorporated futuristic automotive imagery and illuminated celestial backdrops into the production.
Its visual concept centers on a romantic relationship between contrasting personalities, reflected in the project’s promotional description: “He is chaos, she is magic. This was never supposed to happen.”
Ghoshal said the collaboration had been anticipated for some time following her professional association with Badshah on “Indian Idol.”
“We’ve shared so many amazing moments while judging together, but collaborating on an actual song was long overdue. Badshah has brought a completely refreshing perspective to ‘Mahiya’.”
“The track beautifully blends intense emotion with contemporary arrangements, and I think fans are going to love this side of him,” she added.
For Avneet Kaur, appearing in the music video provided an opportunity to work with two musicians whose songs she has followed for years.
The actress described the experience as personally meaningful, particularly because she grew up listening to Ghoshal’s music.
“I’ve grown up listening to Shreya ma’am’s songs and have followed Badshah bhai’s music for years, so being a part of a project that brings their talent together is incredibly special for me. To share the screen in a song featuring two artists whose music I’ve admired for so long is a feeling I’ll always cherish.”
Kaur also praised the choreography and creative direction of the music video, saying the production team worked to capture the song’s romantic atmosphere.
