Golf Legend Tiger Woods Arrested After Florida Crash, Released Hours Later as Social Media Reacts
NEW YORK— Golf legend Tiger Woods was arrested in Florida on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) following a rollover car crash near his home, before being released several hours later, authorities said.
According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Woods was involved in the accident on a narrow two-lane road near Jupiter Island shortly before 2 p.m. He was driving a Land Rover that overturned after attempting to overtake a truck, clipping a trailer and veering off the road before coming to rest on its side.
Officials said Woods showed “signs of impairment” at the scene. While alcohol was later ruled out, authorities indicated he may have been under the influence of medication or another substance. Woods refused to undergo a urinalysis test and was subsequently charged with DUI, property damage, and refusal to submit to testing.
A mugshot released by police showed the 50-year-old golfer with bloodshot eyes. He was taken to a local jail, where he remained for approximately eight hours, as required by Florida law, before being released early Saturday. Reports said Woods left the facility through a rear exit to avoid media attention.
Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek stated that investigators conducted multiple roadside tests and took into account Woods’ history of injuries and surgeries. Woods has faced ongoing physical challenges since a serious car crash in 2021 that left him with significant leg injuries.
The incident marks at least the third time Woods has been involved in a major vehicle crash. Since his 2021 accident, he has competed in 11 tournaments but has struggled to return to top form.
News of the arrest quickly spread, prompting a wave of reactions across the sports world and social media. While many expressed concern for the golfer’s well-being, others responded with humor and criticism. Some users posted sarcastic remarks and memes, reflecting the mixed public sentiment surrounding the high-profile athlete.
The incident comes just days after Woods had returned to competitive golf, adding to the shock among fans and the broader sporting community.
