Berlin– Shafi Burfat, Chairman of the Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz (JSMM), has expressed support for Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s recent comments on Sindh and said the region remains open to forming a confederation with India, based on mutual respect and shared civilisational ties.

Burfat’s statement came a day after Singh noted in New Delhi that while Sindh lies outside India’s present-day borders, it continues to occupy a central place in India’s cultural and civilisational memory. “Sindh may not be with us geographically, but civilisationally it has always been a part of India,” Singh said at an event.

Responding, Burfat thanked the minister for the remarks, calling them significant for the Sindhi people. In a post on X, he said his organisation recognised and appreciated the statement delivered at an event hosted by the Vishwa Sindhu Foundation.

Burfat accused Pakistan of suppressing political dissent in Sindh and alleged widespread abuses, claiming that mutilated bodies of Sindhi activists are being found across the province. He said continued repression has endangered the identity, culture and historic legacy of Sindh, and has fostered aspirations for closer ties with India.

Describing Sindh as both the homeland of the Sindhi nation and a cradle of ancient civilisation, Burfat said its cultural roots lie deeply within the broader Indian civilisational space. He argued that the region was integrated into Pakistan through manipulation under British rule and that its history has since been distorted.

He alleged that Sindh faces cultural and demographic pressure under what he described as Punjab-dominated governance in Pakistan. He accused authorities of exploiting the province’s natural resources and attempting to alter its demographic balance.

Burfat said Singh’s recent comments were seen as a source of encouragement for Sindhis seeking greater unity, renewal, and security. (Source: IANS)
