LEXINGTON, MA—A group of local singers and musicians will play a tribute to legendary Bollywood singer Lata Mangeshkar and would raise funds for Asha for Education. Dubbed as “Tere Sur Aur Mere Geet”, the musical program will be held on Saturday, April 1 at the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum in Lexington, MA.
“The event is a tribute to the queen of music: Lata Mangeshkar,” said Meena Sundaram, a local cardiologist-turned singer and one of the main organizers of Tere Sur Aur Mere Geet. “We have a group of local singers and a live professional band from New York. All proceeds to benefit Asha for Education.”
Asha for Education is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with more than 50 chapters around the world whose mission is to catalyze socio-economic change in India through the education of underprivileged children.
“All proceeds from this event will be donated to ASHA for Education. This organization focuses on education in underserved regions in India,” Sundaram said. “Our focus is to highlight some songs from Lataji’s vast repertoire that highlight her collaboration with various legends. We hope to cover various moods and genres of songs.”
Sundaram said that it is a humble attempt to present some of Lata Mangeshkar’s songs and the immortal music that woven together have given pleasure, hope and joy to people for so many decades.
“Lataji is the epitome of musicality for any singer. Her knowledge of music, vocal prowess, command of language and rigorous training is evident in every song she has rendered,” Sundaram said. “Lataji has Maa Saraswati residing within her and we are blessed to have the opportunity to hear her in our lifetimes.”
The Tere Sur Aur Mere Geet musical program benefiting Asha for Education is scheduled to start at 5:30 pm on Saturday, April 1, 2017, at the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum, located at 33 Marrett Road in Lexington, MA. Tickets are available at http://boston.ashanet.org/lata/. No children under the age of 6 are allowed.
The program will present a total of nine local singers: Anuradha Palakurthi, Vaishnavi Kondapalli, Sharanya Sarkar Varma, Anusha Kulkarni, Meena Sundaram, Shekhar Shastri, Sankar Gangaikondan, Pankaj Shah and Vijay Kumar.
Ajay Jain and Sonal Yadav will serve as emcees of the evening.
