BOSTON—You might have seen some beautiful dances in movies like Pakeezah, Umrao Jaan, or Madhuri Dixit dancing to Kathak beats. But they may not be pure classical kathak, says Tarana School of Kathak Founder Moumita Banerjee.
In an exclusive video interview with INDIA New England News, Ms. Banerjee talks about the three main gharanas of Kathak and now fusion and Sufi Kathak as well.
One of her students last year made history when Arshia Sharma performed her Manch Pravesh with all musicians and singers performing who were born in the United States.

Ms. Banerjee founded the Tarana School of in 2017 to promote and teach Kathak, Indian classical Kathak dance and the 4,000 years old classical tradition to kids and all ages in North America.
She promotes Kathak dance through teaching, performing, presenting artists and creating various artistic productions and presenting them at various venues in the Greater Boston area and in North America.
Ms Banerjee says that Kathak is a precise technique that strengthens not only your body, but also your mind and enriches your soul and we aim to share this art form with you.
Through Kathak students can study not only the dance and performance but they also learn history, music, literature, respect, discipline, focus, and much more.
