Adnan Sami Recalls Planned Mumbai Concert With Zakir Hussain Days Before His Death
Mumbai — Singer-composer Adnan Sami has recalled a concert he was scheduled to perform with legendary tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain in Mumbai just days before Hussain’s death.
Sami shared the memory on Instagram while marking the anniversary of the release of his first album in 1986. He described Hussain as being like an elder brother and reflected on their years of musical collaboration.
“On this day in 1986, my first album was released worldwide. I was still a teenager!! It was an instrumental album of Indian Classical Music of me introducing the Electric Piano as an instrument into the realms of Hindustani Classical Music for the first time. I was accompanied by the late legendary Tabla Maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain. He was like an elder brother to me,” Sami wrote.
He said the two musicians later performed together at instrumental concerts around the world.
“He and I subsequently went onto play many instrumental concerts around the world and it was always an electrifying experience,” Sami wrote.
Sami also revealed that the two had been scheduled to perform together in Mumbai just three days before Hussain’s death.
“Incidentally we were supposed to play a concert together in Mumbai 3 days before he passed away. I still can’t believe that he has moved on. Miss him very much!” he wrote.
Sami shared photos from their performances, including an image of the two musicians playing together on stage.
Hussain, one of India’s most celebrated tabla players and an internationally renowned percussionist, died Dec. 15, 2024, in San Francisco at age 73. (Source: IANS)
