Modi, Macron Call for Urgent Action to Safeguard Navigation in Strait of Hormuz

NEW DELHI — Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron agreed Thursday on the urgent need to restore safety and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, as tensions in West Asia continue to raise global concerns.
The two leaders spoke by phone, revisiting issues they had discussed in a previous conversation on March 19, including the need for de-escalation and a return to dialogue and diplomacy in the region.
“Received a phone call from my dear friend President Emmanuel Macron. We discussed the situation in West Asia and agreed on the need to urgently restore safety and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. We will continue our close cooperation to advance peace and stability in the region and beyond,” Modi said in a post on X following the call.
The conversation comes amid continued international focus on maritime security in the strategic waterway, a key route for global energy supplies.
India and France have maintained close coordination on regional and global security issues. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Macron in Paris last month during an official visit, reinforcing bilateral ties.
Earlier this year, Macron visited India, where both leaders launched the India-France Year of Innovation 2026 and attended the AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, highlighting growing cooperation in technology and strategic sectors.
Modi has also been in contact with other global leaders on the situation in West Asia. Earlier this week, he spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump, with both sides emphasizing the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and secure.
“Received a call from my friend President Donald Trump. We reviewed the substantial progress achieved in our bilateral cooperation in various sectors. We are committed to further strengthening our Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership in all areas. We also discussed the situation in West Asia and stressed the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and secure,” Modi wrote in a separate post on X.
The recent calls underscore a coordinated push among major powers to ensure stability and uninterrupted shipping through one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors. (Source: IANS)
