Kolkata – In a shocking incident from Kolkata’s Beliaghata area, a 35-year-old man has been detained for allegedly beating his 65-year-old mother to death on Saturday afternoon, police said.
The victim, identified as Nandita Basu, was found unconscious in her residence on Kabi Sukanta Sarani around 1:50 p.m., following a call to the police. When officers arrived, they discovered her unresponsive, with blood around her mouth and no signs of life. She was declared dead at the scene and her body was sent to NRS Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination.
The accused, Mainak Basu, lived with his mother and reportedly got into an argument with her earlier in the day. During the altercation, he allegedly assaulted her severely, leading to her death. A case of murder has been registered, and Mainak has been detained for questioning.
“Preliminary evidence suggests she died due to physical assault. However, the exact cause will be determined by the autopsy report,” a senior officer of Kolkata Police said. “We have launched a thorough investigation into the motive and circumstances leading up to the incident.”
Initial findings indicate that tensions between the mother and son were ongoing, possibly rooted in personal or property disputes. Neighbours expressed shock at the violent outcome, describing the incident as deeply disturbing.
Investigators are also exploring the possibility that long-standing conflicts between the two may have culminated in the fatal confrontation. The case has cast a pall over the locality, with residents struggling to come to terms with the tragedy. (Source: IANS)
