India, UK Strengthen Defense Ties During CDS Gen. Chauhan Visit

LONDON — India and the United Kingdom are advancing defense cooperation following high-level talks during Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Anil Chauhan’s official visit to London, marking the first visit by an Indian CDS to the UK.

Gen. Chauhan was received with a Ceremonial Step Line by his UK counterpart, Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton, underscoring the growing strategic partnership between the two countries.

The visit is the fifth senior military engagement between India and the UK this year, following UK Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Sir Harv Smyth’s trip to India in March.

During their meeting, Chauhan and Knighton discussed expanding cooperation in cyber operations, intelligence sharing, industrial collaboration, and joint military exercises, according to the Indian High Commission in London.

In a statement posted on X, India’s Headquarters of Integrated Defence Staff said the visit aims to deepen defense cooperation and advance collaboration in areas including defense industry, intelligence, cyber capabilities, strategic communication, and joint exercises.

“The visit will further deepen Defence Cooperation and will advance defence industrial & intelligence collaboration, cyber cooperation, strategic communication and joint exercises. This visit reinforces a shared commitment to global security, stability and resilience,” the statement said.

Gen. Chauhan also met Vikram K. Doraiswami, India’s High Commissioner to the UK.

According to the UK Ministry of Defence, Chauhan will engage with senior civilian and military leaders during his three-day visit. He is also scheduled to meet representatives of the British defense industry to advance discussions on co-production initiatives between the two countries.

The CDS will visit the Royal College of Defence Studies, where he is expected to interact with a multinational group of students.

The visit follows a series of recent engagements between the two nations. Last month, Chief of Army Staff Gen. Upendra Dwivedi met with UK Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Sir Harvey Smyth in New Delhi to discuss the evolving geostrategic landscape and opportunities for closer cooperation.

Air Chief Marshal Smyth also met Gen. Chauhan and Indian Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh during that visit, with talks focused on enhancing operational coordination, interoperability, and broader military ties. (Source: IANS)
