A.R. Rahman Explains Idea Behind ‘Jai Jai Ram’ From ‘Ramayana’
Mumbai — Academy and Grammy Award-winning composer A.R. Rahman said the idea behind “Jai Jai Ram,” the first song from the upcoming film “Ramayana Part One,” was to preserve the purity and intimacy of a prayer while giving it a cinematic form.
The song was unveiled by the filmmakers on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, marking the beginning of the film’s musical rollout.
“At the heart of ‘Jai Jai Ram’ is the simple and powerful repetition of Shri Ram’s name. Musically, the intention was to preserve the purity and intimacy of a prayer while allowing the composition to grow into a cinematic song,” Rahman said in a statement.
He said singers Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal bring distinct emotional expressions to the lyrics written by Dr. Kumar Vishwas while keeping the devotional spirit of the song intact.
“I hope audiences find both a sense of peace and a personal connection in it,” Rahman added.
The song blends the spiritual character of an aarti with a cinematic arrangement. Its lyrics focus on Shri Ram’s compassion, protection and commitment to dharma, while the repeated invocation forms the devotional core of the track.
“Ramayana” stars Ranbir Kapoor as Shri Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Hanuman and Ravie Dubey as Lakshman.
Vishwas said the three words “Jai Jai Ram” themselves form a complete prayer.
“While writing the song, my endeavour was not to describe Shri Ram, because his meaning cannot be contained in words, but to express the relationship every devotee shares with him: as our guide, our strength and our refuge,” he said.
He added that the language was intentionally kept simple and direct, saying true devotion does not need ornamentation.
