India, Canada Discuss Bilateral Cooperation, Ukraine Situation
New Delhi — External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand on Monday, discussing bilateral cooperation and the situation in Ukraine.
“Good to speak with FM Anita Anand of Canada this evening, on our bilateral cooperation as well as on the Ukraine situation,” Jaishankar said on X.
The conversation comes weeks after India and Canada held their annual Foreign Office Consultations in New Delhi on Sept. 2, continuing efforts to strengthen bilateral ties.
The Indian delegation was led by Ministry of External Affairs Secretary (East) Rudrendra Tandon, while Canadian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arun Thangaraj headed the visiting delegation.
The MEA said the talks reflected sustained momentum in the relationship since June 2025, with both sides reaffirming the importance of India-Canada ties based on democratic values, sovereignty, territorial integrity and the rule of law.
Officials reviewed cooperation in energy and critical minerals, science and technology, education, security and defense, culture, consular matters and people-to-people ties.
The two countries also reiterated their commitment to conclude negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement by the end of the year, with the goal of more than doubling bilateral trade to 70 billion Canadian dollars, or about Rs 4.65 lakh crore, by 2030.
Last month, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also called for deeper financial-sector cooperation and long-term investment partnerships between India and Canada during a business roundtable in Toronto.
Speaking in the presence of Canadian Finance and National Revenue Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne, Sitharaman said India offers scale, growth and opportunities, while Canada brings long-term capital, institutional depth and expertise. (Source: IANS)
