India, U.S. Advance Talks on Bilateral Trade Agreement

New Delhi — India and the United States have concluded a series of high-level meetings aimed at advancing negotiations toward a balanced and mutually beneficial bilateral trade agreement.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and his delegation Wednesday to review the progress of negotiations and discuss ways to deepen economic cooperation.

“We reviewed progress of the ongoing India–US trade discussions and explored avenues to further deepen our economic partnership,” Goyal said in a post on X.

“I appreciate Ambassador Greer’s leadership and the sustained efforts of both teams in advancing our discussions in a constructive and forward-looking manner,” the minister noted.

Goyal said India remains committed to working constructively with the United States to strengthen economic ties and create new opportunities for growth and innovation.

The minister also met Greer and U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Tuesday as both countries sought to move closer to finalizing the trade agreement.

Goyal said India and the United States share a strong and expanding economic partnership.

“We had productive discussions on advancing negotiations towards a balanced and mutually beneficial trade agreement, in line with the Joint Statement of 7 February 2026,” the minister posted.

The proposed agreement is expected to expand market access, create new economic opportunities and strengthen commercial relations between the two countries.

Gor welcomed Greer to India and said the negotiations were progressing toward the completion of a comprehensive bilateral pact.

“Welcome to India, @USTradeRep Ambassador Greer! Great to have you here as we drive forward our ambitious trade agenda. We are moving decisively toward finalising a strong bilateral trade agreement that will unlock new economic opportunities for both countries and significantly deepen the U.S.-India economic partnership,” Gor said in a post on X.

The latest ministerial discussions followed talks between the countries’ chief negotiators in New Delhi earlier this month.

Both sides are working to conclude an interim trade arrangement that could serve as the foundation for a broader bilateral agreement.

The negotiations have taken on greater urgency ahead of the July 24 expiration of a temporary 10 percent U.S. tariff imposed on trading partners. (Source: IANS)
