India, U.S. Discuss Indo-Pacific Security, Deeper Defense Cooperation
New Delhi — India and the United States discussed the evolving security environment in the Indo-Pacific and explored ways to deepen bilateral defense cooperation during talks between senior military officials.
Indian Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth met Lt. Gen. Joel B. Vowell, Deputy Commanding General of U.S. Army Pacific, in New Delhi on Monday.
“Lieutenant General Joel B Vowell, Deputy Commanding General, USARPAC, called on General Dhiraj Seth, COAS, on 28 September. The leaders discussed the evolving security landscape in the Indo-Pacific and explored opportunities to advance bilateral defence engagement across multiple domains,” the Indian Army said Tuesday in a post on X.
The talks also focused on improving interoperability through joint training and military exercises.
“The interaction also focussed on measures to enhance interoperability through joint training and military exercises. The successful outcome of Exercise Yudh Abhyas validated the seamless synergy of joint operations and reaffirmed the commitment of both Armies towards strengthening military-to-military cooperation,” the Army said.
Separately, Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh met a bipartisan U.S. congressional delegation led by Rep. Brian Mast, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, on Monday.
According to India’s Ministry of Defense, the discussions focused on the India-U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, particularly defense industrial and technological cooperation.
The meetings came after Indian and U.S. Army personnel participated in Exercise Yudh Abhyas 2026, training together across multiple platforms and operational scenarios. The exercise was aimed at improving interoperability and increasing familiarity with each other’s tactics, techniques and procedures.
U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, who observed the exercise at the Mahajan Field Firing Range in Rajasthan, said the training reflected the strength of bilateral defense ties.
“Impressive to see US and Indian forces training together at Mahajan Field Firing Range. This exercise reflects the strength of our defence partnership: trust, readiness, interoperability, and shared purpose. Proud of what US Army and Indian Army are achieving together,” Gor wrote on X.
