Rio de Janeiro–Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday used sharp technology analogies to underscore the urgent need for reforming outdated global institutions, arguing that in an era defined by rapid advances in artificial intelligence (AI), it is unacceptable for global governance frameworks to remain stuck in the past.
Speaking at the inaugural session of the 17th BRICS Summit, PM Modi said:
“In the age of AI, where technology evolves every week, it’s unacceptable for global institutions to go eighty years without reform. You can’t run 21st-century software on 20th-century typewriters!”
His remarks come as India launches its ambitious IndiaAI Mission, aimed at transforming lives and empowering businesses through ethical and accountable use of artificial intelligence. A cornerstone of the initiative is the ‘safe and trusted AI’ pillar, which focuses on robust governance, indigenous frameworks, and equitable access.
Modi described the expansion of BRICS and the inclusion of new member nations as a sign of the bloc’s evolving relevance and adaptability in a changing world.
He also made a strong case for a multipolar and inclusive world order, urging comprehensive—not cosmetic—reforms in global institutions.
“These reforms must go beyond symbolism. They should bring real, visible changes in governance structures, voting rights, and leadership representation,” the Prime Minister said. “The priorities and challenges of the Global South must be central to policymaking.”
Reiterating India’s longstanding commitment to international cooperation, he added:
“India has always considered it a duty to rise above self-interest and work toward the welfare of humanity.”
The speech resonated with many attending leaders, especially in light of growing frustration among emerging economies over unequal representation in institutions like the United Nations, World Bank, and IMF. (Source: IANS)
