IAGB to Celebrate India’s 75th Republic Day on Jan. 27 with the Theme of “Chalachitram – 110 Years of Indian Cinema”

BURLINGTON, MA—India Association of Greater Boston, known as IAGB, will celebrates India’s 75th Republic Day on Jan. 27th at the Burlington High School in Burlington, MA. This year’s theme of the Republic Day Mela is “Chalachitram – 110 Years of Indian Cinema.”

IAGB President Tanu Phoenix said that IAGB is ecstatic to be honoring 110 years of Indian cinema in a meaningful and inclusive way by showcasing the following: Stage performances (songs & dances) showcasing unique, crowd-pleasing performances such as dance medleys of old timeless classics / new chartbuster songs from movies in an Indian regional language or Hindi (Bollywood) cinema.

Since inception of Indian cinema in 1913, when Dadasaheb Phalke released Raja Harishchandra, Indian cinema has spread out in multiple branches through various film industries, including the much known Bollywood. Indian cinema is composed of multilingual and multi-ethnic film art.

“I feel so fortunate that quite a few of our super talented regional organizations will be joining us to showcase the regional cinematic journey of their Indian states of origin,” said Ms. Phoenix.

Other Indian-American organizations joining IAGB Republic Day celebrations include:

  1. Bangla O Biswa
  2. Maheshwari Mahasabha of North America
  3. New England Kannada Koota (NEKK)
  4. New England Malayalee Association (NEMA)
  5. Odisha Society of New England (OSNE)
  6. Prabasi of New England 7. Tamil Makkal Mandram (TMM).

Since its founding in 1962, IAGB has been an unifying force for 100,000-plus in the Indian American Community.

“IAGB has helped maintain a strong sense of heritage and community for Indian Americans of all ages and backgrounds by helping them come together and celebrate traditions,” said Mr. Phoenix. “This celebration reflects how a strong sense of heritage and community collaboration can result in a large and successful gathering

Added IAGB Vice President Nilesh Agrawal: “As the oldest non-profit Indian American organization in New England, the IAGB has relentlessly served the needs of Indian American communities all across New England.”

IAGB will celebrate its annual Republic Day Mela in pomp and style, on Saturday January 27th, from 12:00 to 7:30 pm.

Date: Saturday, Jan 27, 2024

Competitions: 11:45 am – 3 pm

There will be seven competitions, offering the Indian diaspora a chance to actively exhibit and hone their talent in a variety of skill areas, says Mr. Agrawal.
