Shikhar Dhawan Calls for Strict Punishment After Delhi Holi Killing

NEW DELHI — Former Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan has expressed grief over the death of 26-year-old Tarun Kumar in Delhi’s Uttam Nagar and called for the strictest punishment for those responsible, condemning the violence that followed a minor Holi incident.
In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Dhawan wrote: “Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Tarun Kumar in Uttam Nagar. It’s heartbreaking that something as small as a child throwing a water balloon during Holi could escalate into such violence. Humanity should never fall to this level. Prayers for his family and hope the culprits face the strictest punishment.”
The incident occurred March 4 during Holi celebrations in JJ Colony in Hasthsal village in the Uttam Nagar area of Delhi.
According to police and media reports, an 11-year-old girl from Tarun’s family was playing on the terrace of her home when she accidentally threw a water balloon filled with colored water that splashed on a woman from a neighboring family. The incident reportedly triggered an argument between the two households, which had previous tensions.
Although the dispute initially appeared to subside, police said Tarun was allegedly attacked later that night when he returned home after celebrating Holi with friends.
Authorities said a group of 15 to 20 people allegedly ambushed him and assaulted him with iron rods, hockey sticks, cricket bats, stones and other weapons. Tarun suffered severe injuries and was taken to a hospital, where he died from his wounds on March 5.
Several others, including members of his family, were also injured during the clashes.
Delhi Police registered a murder case under multiple charges, including provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act because Tarun belonged to a Scheduled Caste community.
Police have arrested eight adults and one juvenile in connection with the case. Authorities also deployed police and Rapid Action Force personnel in the area after tensions escalated.
Local residents staged protests demanding swift justice.
In a related development, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi partially demolished an illegal structure belonging to one of the accused in the days following the incident.
Tarun, who had been pursuing a course in digital marketing to support his family, was remembered by relatives as a hardworking young man with aspirations for the future.
The killing has sparked outrage on social media and within the local community, with many echoing Dhawan’s call for strong action against those responsible. Police said the investigation is continuing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the attack and whether additional individuals were involved. (Source: IANS)
