Two Massachusetts-Based Indian American Venture Capital Founders Make National List

Nilanjana Bhowmik of Converge and Gayatri Sarkar of Advaita Capital represent Massachusetts in a list of 20 leading Indian American-founded venture capital firms

BOSTON–Beyond the firms founded by Indian Americans, numerous Indian American senior executives and investors across the country hold leadership roles at other major venture capital firms, contributing to investment decisions, supporting entrepreneurs and helping shape the future of the American innovation economy. Their work spans a wide range of industries and investment stages, highlighting the community’s broader influence on the venture capital ecosystem.

Two venture capital leaders with strong ties to Greater Boston—Nilanjana Bhowmik, founder and general partner of Converge, and Gayatri Sarkar, founder and CEO of Advaita Capital—are listed in an IndUS Business Journal report on 20 top venture capital firms founded by Indian Americans in the United States.

The report highlights a striking geographic concentration in the industry: 16 of the 20 firms are based in California, while Massachusetts and New York account for two firms each. The distribution underscores California’s prominent place in the American venture capital ecosystem while drawing attention to the investment firms emerging from other major innovation centers.

For Massachusetts, the inclusion of Bhowmik and Sarkar highlights the contributions of two founders building investment platforms with distinct approaches to backing businesses and entrepreneurs.

Nilanjana Bhowmik: Investing in the next generation of technology companies

Nilanjana Bhowmik

Bhowmik is the founder and general partner of Converge, a venture capital firm based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with a presence in other major technology markets. The firm invests in early-stage business-to-business technology companies, including those working in artificial intelligence, cloud and blockchain infrastructure, edge computing, robotics and enterprise software.

A veteran of the venture capital and technology industries, Bhowmik brings experience in investment banking and operating roles to her work with entrepreneurs. Before establishing Converge, she was a general partner at Longworth Venture Partners, where she led investments in enterprise technology.

Her investment experience includes companies that have gone on to achieve significant milestones, including acquisitions. These include Nimbella, acquired by DigitalOcean; RapidMiner, acquired by Altair; and Jibe, acquired by iCIMS.

Converge was founded by Bhowmik and fellow venture capital investor Maia Heymann. The firm’s focus on early-stage technology businesses reflects the important role venture capital plays in helping entrepreneurs turn emerging ideas into scalable companies.

Bhowmik has also been active in the Boston entrepreneurial community. She previously served as president of TiE-Boston and has supported initiatives aimed at expanding entrepreneurial education and access to business opportunities.

Gayatri Sarkar

Gayatri Sarkar: Bringing a broader perspective to venture investing

The second Massachusetts-based founder featured in the report is Gayatri Sarkar, founder and CEO of Boston-based Advaita Capital.

Advaita Capital invests in growth-stage technology businesses, with interests that include artificial intelligence, deep technology and climate-related innovation. Its investment approach reflects the growing importance of technologies that address complex industrial, economic and environmental challenges.

Sarkar brings a multidisciplinary background to the investment world. Her professional experience includes roles associated with technology, finance and consulting, as well as work connected to the Federal Reserve Bank. She later pursued entrepreneurship while studying at Harvard, where she developed a technology startup.

Through Advaita Capital and She-VC, Sarkar operates at the intersection of technology investment, entrepreneurship and efforts to expand representation in venture capital.
