New Delhi– Former New Zealand all-rounder Jesse Ryder believes India’s newly appointed Test captain Shubman Gill gained invaluable experience during the recent tour of England.

Gill had a standout July, scoring 754 runs in the five-match series, including a double century and two additional hundreds, at a remarkable average of 75.40. His performance earned him the Player of the Series award and marked the second-highest run tally ever in a World Test Championship series. Under his leadership, India twice rallied from behind to draw the series 2–2.

“There’s a lot of talent coming through, especially in India,” Ryder told IANS. “Shubman Gill is a young fellow, and England would have been a good learning curve for him.”

After trailing 1–2 following the Lord’s Test, India staged an impressive comeback to level the “Anderson-Tendulkar” series. Mohammed Siraj spearheaded the bowling attack in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, finishing as the series’ leading wicket-taker with 23 scalps. His match figures of 4–86 and 5–125 in the fifth and final Test at The Oval were instrumental in securing the draw.

When asked who he sees as India’s next breakout star, Ryder named opener Yashasvi Jaiswal. The left-hander made an immediate impact with a commanding century at Headingley in the opening Test and capped the series with a determined 118 in the second innings of the decider at The Oval, finishing with 411 runs in five matches.

“India has got a lot of talent coming through, and they’ve got great players like Jaiswal,” Ryder added. (Source: IANS)
