Deepika beats SRK as Indian Cinema’s top star in 2018: IMDb
Mumbai– With just one film in her account in 2018, actress Deepika Padukone has made it as the top star of Indian cinema in 2018, beating her “Om Shanti Om” co-star Shah Rukh Khan, according to leading global movie website IMDb.
IMDb on Tuesday unveiled the ‘2018 Top 10 Stars of Indian Cinema’ list. The list was derived using data from IMDbPro STARmeter rankings, which are based on the actual page views of more than 250 million monthly visitors to the platform, read a statement.
Superstar Shah Rukh Khan earned the second spot, which was followed by Aamir Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Kubbra Sait, Irrfan Khan, Radhika Apte and Akshay Kumar.
“Deepika Padukone’s strong performance in this year’s ‘Padmaavat’ pushed her into the top spot on the 2018 IMDb Top Stars of Indian Cinema list,” said Neha Gureja, Head of International for IMDb.
Sonam Kapoor named PETA India’s 2018 Person of the Year
Mumbai– Actress Sonam Kapoor, a vegan, has been named People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India’s Person of the Year for 2018.
Sonam has been feted as she sings in praise of vegan eating and because she keeps animal skins out of her handbag line for her fashion brand Rheson, apart from taking other action for the welfare of animals.
“Whether she’s enjoying vibrant vegan meals or rallying her fans to do their part to stop animal suffering, Sonam Kapoor never hesitates to help animals any way she can,” PETA India Associate Director Sachin Bangera said in a statement.
“We encourage everyone to take a page out of her book and live with compassion and respect for all beings,” he added.
In 2016, Sonam was named PETA India’s Hottest Vegetarian Celebrity, and she earned a Compassionate Business Award from the group a year later for her cruelty-free handbag line.
Rohit Shetty is king of commercial cinema: Sara Ali Khan
Mumbai– Bollywood newcomer Sara Ali Khan considers her “Simmba” director Rohit Shetty the “king of commercial cinema”.
“I am a huge Rohit sir fan. I aspire for versatility, and I mean it. I messaged Rohit sir thrice and he responded on the third message. I think he is the king of commercial cinema. So, knowing that Rohit sir and Ranveer Singh were coming together, I had to,” Sara told the media here when asked why she was so interested in working in a Rohit Shetty film.
Sharing the story behind her coming on board for the film, Shetty said: “Nobody approached Sara. She approached (us) herself. She literally cooked my brain by messaging me so many times. Sara happened because of Gattu (Abhishek Kapoor, director of Sara’s debut film) because he also called me and asked me to cast Sara! He took the initiative and told me to watch some footage of ‘Kedarnath’ that they had already shot. Then I saw it and called her.”
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan encourages differently-abled kids
Mumbai– Actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan says every person is differently-abled because everyone has different abilities and gifts.
Aishwarya addressed students, teachers and parents at the Annual Function of Special Kids, hosted by Narsee Monjee Educational Trust, here on Tuesday.
“I feel everyone who is present here is differently-abled because we all have different abilities, different gifts but we have the blessing to realise our potential… That is, by far, the best medal we all can give to ourselves and we all can experience. So, kudos to all the participants. May God bless you,” the actress said.
Aishwarya thanked the teachers and trainers who worked with the children.
The mother of one of them said extra-curricular activities give students an opportunity to realise their potential.
She said: “It gives an opportunity to these beautiful kids to participate and realise their potential, dream and more than anything else to build friendship that sports encourages you to experience.”
Supriya Pilgaonkar joins ‘Ishqbaaaz…’
Mumbai– Actress Supriya Pilgaonkar will play a police commissioner in the show “Ishqbaaaz – Pyaar Ki Ek Dhinchaak Kahaani”, which also stars Nakuul Mehta and Manjiri Pupala.
“I am very excited to be part of a long-running show like ‘Ishqbaaaz’ because I get to play a character that I have never played before, that of a police commissioner. I have always loved women in armed forces and the sense of power they exude,” Surpriya said in a statement.
“On the show, my character gets to show her human side along with her strong and independent demeanour. As opposed to my previous roles on screen, I will be seen in a completely different light on ‘Ishqbaaaz’ which was instrumental for me to give a nod to the role in flat half an hour. I hope viewers love my unique avatar on screen and enjoy watching my performance,” she added.
The episode featuring her will first air on StarPlus on Thursday.
Supriya, who has also done films and plays, is known for her work in shows like “Tu Tu Main Main”, “Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi”, “Sasural Genda Phool” and “Nach Baliye”.

Mumbai– The road to the Oscars has ended for “Village Rockstars” director Rima Das. But looking back at the journey of the Assamese drama, she says it has been one full of love, hopes and aspirations.
The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences on Monday announced that nine films have advanced to the next round of voting in the Foreign Language Film category for the 91st Academy Awards. “Village Rockstars”, a little film with a big heart, was not one of them.
Sharing a heart-warming photograph of the children in the film, Das wrote an emotional Instagram post about the love that the movie has received in a journey that has seen it travel to festivals in the nooks and corners of the world.
“How we have all grown since we first began. Back then, little did we – my band of rockstars and I — know how far from the village our film would take us. From Toronto to Paris, Cairo to Los Angeles and even all the way back home, the love which greeted us in every town, at every screening, was beyond any of our wildest dreams. (IANS)
