18th Annual LearnQuest Music Festival Kicks Off This Friday at MIT with a Celebration of Indian Classical Excellence

CAMBRIDGE, MA — One of the nation’s premier showcases of Indian classical music returns this week as the 18th Annual LearnQuest Music Festival launches with a dynamic three-day program, beginning Friday evening at Thomas Tull Hall at MIT in Cambridge, MA.

The opening concert, presented in collaboration with MITHA, will begin at 7:00 PM and set the tone for a weekend of world-class performances, cross-cultural collaboration, and musical mastery.

Audiences will be treated to an electrifying inaugural program featuring a rare tall vadya ensemble (percussion jugalbandi) led by maestros Pandit Arup Chattopadhyay (tabla), V. Selvaganesh (kanjira), and Sai Raghavan (mridangam). The high-energy rhythmic dialogue will be followed by a deeply expressive surbahar and sitar duet featuring Pandit Sugato Nag alongside Chattopadhyay, blending melodic depth with intricate rhythmic interplay.

Following Friday’s kickoff, the festival moves to its main venue at Regis College Auditorium for a full weekend of performances on Saturday and Sunday.

A Rare Convergence of Musical Traditions

Over nearly two decades, the LearnQuest Music Festival has established itself as a leading platform in the U.S. for both Hindustani (North Indian) and Carnatic (South Indian) classical traditions.

Hindustani music is celebrated for its improvisational richness, emotive ragas, and intricate rhythms, often expressed through instruments like the sitar, sarod, bansuri, and tabla. In contrast, Carnatic music emphasizes structured compositions, complex rhythmic frameworks, and virtuosic improvisation, typically featuring instruments such as the violin, veena, mridangam, and kanjira.

By presenting both traditions side by side, the festival offers audiences a rare, immersive journey through the full spectrum of Indian classical music—something seldom experienced in a single U.S. event.

18 Years of Cultural Impact

Organized by the LearnQuest Academy of Music, the festival has grown into its flagship event and a cornerstone of the New England cultural calendar. Over the years, it has attracted legendary performers, rising stars, and devoted audiences from across the country.

As the 18th edition gets underway, organizers promise another unforgettable celebration of artistry, tradition, and innovation—bringing together musicians, students, and music lovers in a shared cultural experience.

For a full schedule and additional details, audiences are encouraged to visit the LearnQuest Academy of Music website.

With its powerful opening lineup and a legacy of excellence behind it, this year’s festival is poised to once again transform Greater Boston into a vibrant hub of global musical expression.
