MEDFORD, MA–The 18-year-old student who drowned Monday after he didn’t resurface from the waters of Upper Mystic Lake in Medford, MA has been identified as Apurba Devkota of Nepal, according to news reports.
The Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Medford Chief of Police Jack Buckley confirmed that shortly after 8:00 p.m. on Monday Massachusetts State Police, Medford Police and Tufts University Police responded to Mystic Valley Parkway in the area of the Tufts Sailing Pavilion for a possible drowning.
“Divers subsequently recovered the 18-year-old Medford man in approximately 20 feet of water, first responders immediately began life saving efforts and the male was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital where he was pronounced dead around 10:00 p.m.,” according to a statement from the Middlesex District Attorney office. “The preliminary investigation suggest the man was unable to swim and that he entered the water and immediately appeared to be in distress before going beneath the surface.”
The statement said that this is an ongoing investigation and no foul play is suspected.
NBC Boston said that the teen who drowned in the lake was Identified by relatives as recent high school graduate.
NBC Boston identified the victim as Apurba Devkota, 18, quoting relatives.
“He was a senior at Medford High School and set to attend the University of Massachusetts Amherst in the fall, but is now being remembered as sharp and hard-working,” NBC Boston said.
Devkota of Nepal was training to be a server at a restaurant in Arlington this summer. His co-workers found out the news Tuesday morning, according to NBC Boston.
“He was very good, energetic, hard-working, and he was a very good person,” said NBC Boston quoted Manisha Shrestha, who works at the restaurant, as saying.
