New Delhi– A group of 110 Indian students evacuated from northern Iran is set to arrive in New Delhi in the early hours of Thursday, as India initiates “Operation Sindhu” to bring its nationals home from conflict-affected regions.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the students were safely moved across the border into Armenia on June 17, with assistance from Indian diplomatic missions in both Iran and Armenia. They traveled by road to Yerevan, the Armenian capital, before boarding a special flight that departed at 2:55 p.m. local time on June 18. Their flight is expected to land in New Delhi early on June 19.
“This marks the initial phase of Operation Sindhu,” the MEA said in an official statement issued Wednesday.
The evacuation comes amid escalating tensions in the region due to the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel. Indian authorities have stepped up efforts in recent days to ensure the safety of citizens caught in the crossfire.
The Indian government expressed gratitude to both Iran and Armenia for their cooperation in facilitating the evacuation.
“India places the highest priority on the safety and security of its nationals abroad,” the MEA stated. “Our embassy in Iran continues to assist large numbers of Indians in relocating from high-risk areas to safer locations within the country, with further evacuations planned using all feasible options.”
The MEA has urged Indian nationals in Iran to remain in close contact with the Indian Embassy in Tehran via its emergency helpline and to utilize the 24×7 Control Room set up by the MEA in New Delhi. (Source: IANS)
