Trump Visits New York Mayor Mamdani at Gracie Mansion
New York — President Donald Trump visited New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Gracie Mansion on Monday, an unusual stop by a sitting president at the mayor’s official residence during Trump’s trip to the city for the United Nations General Assembly.
The meeting brought together two politicians with sharply different political views. Mamdani is a democratic socialist, while Trump has frequently criticized socialism in his political messaging. Despite those differences, the two appeared cordial following their hourlong meeting.
Trump praised Mamdani’s early tenure and expressed optimism about his leadership of the city. The two also discussed issues affecting New Yorkers, including housing and affordability.
Mamdani highlighted a proposal to build a large housing development over a rail yard, saying the project could create an entirely new neighborhood and would require federal assistance.
The mayor also said he raised disagreements with Trump over immigration policy and discussed protections for immigrant New Yorkers. Trump acknowledged that Mamdani held strong views on the issue.
The two leaders also addressed press access. Mamdani said he supported allowing members of the media to attend events at Gracie Mansion, while Trump defended his administration’s decision to restrict access for several news organizations. CNN, MS NOW and Politico filed a lawsuit this week challenging those restrictions.
Monday’s meeting was not their first. Trump and Mamdani had previously met at the White House, where they also discussed issues affecting New York City.
