Jaishankar Meets World Leaders in New York, Discusses Bilateral Ties
United Nations — External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a series of meetings with world leaders in New York during the United Nations high-level week, discussing bilateral relations, economic cooperation and international developments.
Jaishankar met Nauru President David Adeang and reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting the Pacific island nation’s development.
“Appreciate the strong bilateral and multilateral cooperation with Nauru. India remains strongly committed as a development partner,” Jaishankar wrote on X after the meeting Monday.
Nauru has received assistance for several projects through the India-UN Development Partnership Fund.
Jaishankar also met Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popsoi and discussed the conflict in Ukraine, along with bilateral relations.
He said the two sides “noted the progress in our bilateral political, economic and educational ties.”
During a meeting with Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis, Jaishankar reviewed growing economic relations following the implementation of the India-European Free Trade Association Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement. EFTA includes Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
Jaishankar also met Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.
“Our conversation focused on developments over the past few weeks,” Jaishankar wrote on X.
His other meetings included talks with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Roberto Kury, Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar and Hungarian Deputy Prime Minister Anita Orban.
Jaishankar also participated in a meeting with foreign ministers from the Visegrad Group, which includes Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland.
Later, he attended a meeting involving foreign ministers from European Union countries and several Indo-Pacific nations.
The annual UN General Assembly high-level week brings together leaders from the organization’s 193 member states, providing opportunities for bilateral and multilateral discussions on international and regional issues. (Source: IANS)
