BOSTON– Swadhyay Family, a devotional movement based in Maharashtra, India, and with followers across the globe, including the United States, will host an event offering blood for Christmas at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

Organizers said about 100 people are expected to attend the event that will be held on Saturday, Dec. 24, organizers said. Dana Farber is located at 450 Brookline Avenue in Boston.

The followers of this group follow the teachings of its founder, Pandurang Athavle, who believed that though people may not be related by blood, they are related through the common blood-maker by sharing the spirit of one divine Father.

Therefore, the offering of blood can be a spiritual act as an expression of gratefulness to the Lord, organizers and followers say.

The blood donation experiment was first implemented on Christmas Day 2007 by followers in the United States and United Kingdom.

On the day of Christmas, Dec. 24, each person will go to the Dana Farber blood collection center where there will be bhavgeets recited, a small exhibition will be viewed and proceeded to introspect in the hall with Yogeshwar Bhagwaan’s picture.

Dana Farber volunteers will draw the blood of the participants. Then each participant will be re-energized with refreshments.

Dana Farber provides care to children and adults with cancer while advancing the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, cure, and prevention of cancer and related diseases. As an affiliate of Harvard Medical School and a Comprehensive Cancer Center designated by the National Cancer Institute, the Institute also provides training for new generations of physicians and scientists, designs programs that promote public health particularly among high-risk and underserved populations, and disseminates innovative patient therapies and scientific discoveries to our target community across the United States and throughout the world.
