New Delhi — Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar paid tribute to Rohit Sharma following the latter’s surprise announcement of his retirement from Test cricket, praising his contributions as both a player and captain over a decade-long career in the longest format of the game.

Tendulkar, who personally handed Rohit his Test cap (No. 280) during his debut against the West Indies at Eden Gardens in 2013, took to social media to reflect on Rohit’s journey.

“I remember presenting you with your Test cap in 2013 at Eden Gardens and then standing with you on the balcony of Wankhede Stadium the other day — your journey has been a remarkable one,” Tendulkar wrote on X. “From then to now, you have given your best to Indian cricket as a player and as a captain. Well done, Rohit, on your Test career, and best wishes for what lies ahead.”

Rohit’s Test career began with a flourish—scoring 177 in his debut match and an unbeaten 111 in the following Test. He was named Player of the Series in what also turned out to be Tendulkar’s farewell series. Over 67 Tests, Rohit amassed 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57, with 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries. His career-best score of 212 came against South Africa in Ranchi in 2019.

Rohit’s announcement came just weeks ahead of India’s upcoming five-Test tour of England, which begins June 20 at Headingley. The decision has added urgency to India’s search for a long-term Test captain. Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah are currently seen as leading candidates to take over the role.

As Test captain since 2022, Rohit led India through a period of transition and injuries, guiding the team to 12 victories in 24 matches. His tenure included two appearances in the ICC World Test Championship Final and a historic Test series win in Australia during the 2020–21 season.

While stepping away from Test cricket, Rohit will continue to represent India in One Day Internationals. He had already announced his retirement from T20 Internationals following India’s T20 World Cup triumph last year. Under his leadership, India also lifted the ICC Champions Trophy by defeating New Zealand in the final, securing the nation’s third title in the tournament.

Rohit’s departure from the Test arena marks the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, leadership, and memorable performances in Indian whites. (Source: IANS)
