Rāga-Rang: Musicians Ready to Shower Melodic Delight on April 29 in Lexington

LEXINGTON, MA–Rāga-Rang  is again ready to bring the Boston area with a shower of Indian Classical music, timeless film songs, and new innovative compositions for lovers of Indian music, the organizers said in a statement.

This fifth edition of the show will take place on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 6:00 pm at the Scottish Rite Museum located at  33 Marrett Road, Lexington MA.

In a presentation designed to enthrall music lovers, classical enthusiasts as well as the Bollywood buff, Rāga-Rang brings a star-studded line-up of some of the most illustrious New England area musicians and delightful guest artists. The vocal line-up includes Subhadra Desai, Shuchita Rao, Pradeep Shukla, Aditya Rohit, Meena Sundaram, Sankar Gangaikondan, Shekhar Shastri, Shubhra Bhattacharya Chandra, and Vijay Kumar.

A peerless set of musicians form the live Raga-Rang orchestra: Nitin Mitta (Tabla), Shyam Vai (Keyboard), Phil Kaplan (Guitar), Ravi Torvi (Harmonium), Hiral Parikh (Percussion), Gaurishankar Chandrasekhar (Mridangam), Abhilash Mehta (Dholak), Sujeet Phanse (Flute), and Marc Rossi (Piano). Sound engineer is Jawed Wahid.

The audience will hear an inspiring rendition of well-known classical and semi-classical compositions.

“We are delighted to add Pt. Nitin Mitta, the tabla maestro to our team,” the statement said. “Also, joining us will be notable scholar-singer from India, Dr. Subhadra Desai. In addition, New England veterans Drs. Pradeep Shukla and Marc Rossi will add innovative excitement.”

Mitta has had association with film music early in his music career when he used to play tabla in the Telugu film industry.

“I am excited about performing at Rāga-Rang, because the best film songs are based on raga-s and designed bring joy in three minutes. For that the composer, lyricist, singer and the orchestra work extremely hard and cleverly; Ilayaraja and RD Burman are my favorite composers,” he said in the statement.

Dr. Desai recently presented a packed workshop on the Hindustani musical style of ‘Tarana’, which was organized by LearnQuest.

“We have learned and performed many Taranas at Rāga-Rang over the years, and Subhadraji gave us rare insight into this exciting form of rhythmic melodies – what a treat that we get to perform with her next week,” said the well-known singer Dr. Meena Sundaram.

“In Rāga-Rang, I get to sing the songs that are closest to my heart, with a top-notch live orchestra,” said Sankar Gangaikondan, star singer and Rāga-Rang team member.

The Rāga-Rang orchestra is being led by Shyam Vai on keyboard; he has composed music for many Indian and American feature films and his music has been sung by Shankar Mahadevan, Sonu Nigam, and Shreya Ghoshal among others.

“The fantastic response from the Rāga-Rang audience over the years has led to the wonderful realization that we are all inextricably connected with one another through the beautiful language of music and emotions,” said Shuchita Rao.

“Rāga-Rang is our humble effort to unlock the supreme delight which is always hidden in the listener’s heart, just waiting for an inspiring reminder. We invite you to be touched with that delight once again,” said Shekhar Shastri, the producer of Rāga-Rang.
