New Delhi– Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a five-nation tour beginning July 2, with stops in Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced Friday.

The diplomatic mission aims to deepen India’s engagement across Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean, as well as strengthen its role as a voice for the Global South.

Historic Visit to Ghana

The tour kicks off in Ghana from July 2–3, marking PM Modi’s first official visit to the West African nation and the first prime ministerial visit from India in over three decades. He will meet with Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo to review the growing bilateral partnership and explore enhanced cooperation in energy, defense, and development. According to the MEA, the visit will also reinforce India’s strategic outreach to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union.

Strengthening Caribbean Ties in Trinidad and Tobago

From July 3–4, Prime Minister Modi will visit Trinidad and Tobago at the invitation of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. This marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Caribbean nation since 1999. During the visit, PM Modi will meet with both President Christine Carla Kangaloo and Prime Minister Bissessar, and is also expected to address a joint session of the Trinidad and Tobago Parliament.

India and Trinidad and Tobago share deep historical ties dating back to 1845, when the first Indian indentured workers arrived aboard the Fatel Razack. Modi’s visit is expected to reinforce cultural and economic ties, and further digital cooperation following Trinidad and Tobago’s recent adoption of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI).

Strategic Engagement in Argentina

The Prime Minister will travel to Argentina from July 4–5 at the invitation of President Javier Milei. The two leaders will hold talks to enhance cooperation in defense, agriculture, mining, energy, trade, and cultural exchange. India and Argentina upgraded their relationship to a Strategic Partnership in 2019, and Modi’s visit is expected to give new momentum to bilateral engagement.

Modi and Milei last met during the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro in November 2024. India is now among Argentina’s top five trading partners, and both nations have expressed satisfaction over the expanding scope of their partnership.

BRICS Summit and State Visit to Brazil

From July 5–8, PM Modi will travel to Brazil for the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, followed by a state visit to the capital, Brasília. The summit, set for July 6–7 at the Museum of Modern Art, will focus on global governance reforms, multilateralism, artificial intelligence, climate change, global health, and economic stability.

On the sidelines, Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with several BRICS leaders. During the state visit, he will meet Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to discuss further collaboration in trade, defense, energy, agriculture, space, and cultural exchange.

First Official Visit to Namibia

Modi’s final stop will be Namibia on July 9, marking his first visit to the country and only the third-ever by an Indian Prime Minister. He will hold talks with newly elected President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and pay tribute to Namibia’s Founding Father and first President, the late Dr. Sam Nujoma. Modi is also expected to address Namibia’s Parliament.

India and Namibia share historical ties, and Modi’s visit underscores New Delhi’s growing commitment to its African partners.

A Global South Champion

This tour comes at a time when India is positioning itself as a reliable partner for the Global South. PM Modi has repeatedly emphasized India’s role as a “Vishwa Bandhu” — a friend to the world — in a divided global landscape. Over the past decade, India has strengthened its diplomatic and developmental presence across Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean, bolstering its status as an emerging global leader.
