Bengaluru– Olympic champion and two-time medalist Neeraj Chopra says he draws inspiration from Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, particularly for his ability to thrive under pressure and deliver consistently despite facing world-class opposition.

Chopra, fresh off victories at the Paris Diamond League and the Ostrava Golden Spike, is now preparing to host the first-ever Neeraj Chopra Classic — a World Athletics ‘A’ category javelin throw competition set to take place on July 5 at Bengaluru’s Sree Kanteerava Stadium. It will be the first event of its kind in India.

In an interview with Star Sports, Chopra was asked which cricketer’s “superpower” he would like to have to enhance his javelin performance. He chose Tendulkar without hesitation.

“Sachin Tendulkar represented our country so well for so many years and set countless records. The way he overcame challenges from some of the best bowlers in the world and still performed consistently — that’s the kind of superpower I’d like to have. It would help me face challenges calmly and perform at my best,” Chopra said.

The reigning world champion also spoke about his admiration for Australia’s pace legend Brett Lee and India’s Jasprit Bumrah, both of whom he believes could throw the javelin impressively.

“I’ve heard Brett Lee used to throw javelins before becoming a cricketer. During his peak, I think he could’ve done quite well in javelin. I’d also like to try it out with Jasprit Bumrah — maybe he can teach me a few bowling tricks too,” he added. “Though both involve throwing, javelin and bowling are very different. Still, I’d love to learn from him.”

Chopra even drew a technical parallel between cricket and javelin, pointing out that MS Dhoni’s famous ‘Helicopter Shot’ involves a swing of the body that mirrors the motion and power of a javelin throw.

On his mindset before competitions, Chopra said he avoids rituals and focuses on staying composed. “I try to stay calm on the day of my event. I don’t overthink. I just focus on giving my 100 percent, eating well, and getting proper rest,” he explained.

He also shared the most valuable piece of advice he’s received — from his coach, legendary javelin thrower Jan Železný, who still holds the world record at 98.48 meters.

“Coach Železný told me that when I run up to throw, I should do it with a sense of flow, not tightness. It should feel natural — like how an 18-year-old runs, full of freedom and energy,” said Chopra. “I’m learning the importance of that flow. In any sport, rhythm matters. Take Roger Federer — he played with such grace and fluidity, it never looked forced. That’s what I’m trying to incorporate into my training.”

Fans can watch the Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 live on July 5 at 7 p.m. IST on Star Sports 1 (Hindi), Star Sports 2, and JioCinema. (Source: IANS)
