Narendra Modi Set to Become India’s Longest-Serving Prime Minister

On June 10, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will surpass Jawaharlal Nehru's record for the longest uninterrupted tenure as the head of an elected government in India

NEW DELHI — Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to achieve a historic milestone on June 10 when he surpasses Jawaharlal Nehru’s record to become the longest-serving Prime Minister of India in continuous office as the head of an elected government.

The achievement marks a significant moment in India’s political history and reflects more than a decade of uninterrupted leadership since Modi first assumed office in May 2014 following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s decisive electoral victory.

Leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) described the milestone as a moment of national significance, highlighting India’s economic growth, expanding global influence, and political stability during Modi’s tenure.

Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said Modi’s leadership over the past 12 years has been marked by efforts aimed at the country’s overall development.

“People gave a historic mandate in 2014 by choosing a non-Congress party as an alternative and also gave a full majority to the BJP to form the government at the Centre,” Shekhawat said. “In the last 12 years, under the leadership of the Prime Minister, several efforts have been made for the overall development of the country.”

Shekhawat also pointed to India’s economic performance amid global uncertainty, noting projections that place India’s GDP growth for fiscal year 2026 at 7.7 percent.

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal described Modi as one of the world’s most influential political leaders and noted that the milestone also reflects nearly 25 years of continuous public leadership, including Modi’s tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat before becoming Prime Minister.

“PM Modi is loved by 140 crore citizens, he is the most popular leader in the world, and a highly influential international statesman recognized across the globe,” Goyal said.

The BJP and NDA plan to organize public outreach and engagement programs across the country to mark the occasion.

Bihar BJP President Sanjay Saraogi said Modi’s tenure represents a period during which India’s military strength, economic influence, and foreign policy profile have expanded significantly.

Shiv Sena leader Manisha Kayande called the achievement “a matter of pride for the country,” noting that Modi will surpass the tenure records of both Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi.

“It is a matter of pride for the country that someone has surpassed the records of Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi,” Kayande said.

Shiv Sena spokesperson Krishna Hegde credited Modi with enhancing India’s international standing and growing economic influence.

“Today, India is recognized and trusted globally,” Hegde said. “India’s economy is going to be the third largest in the world, and much of this credit goes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”

Janata Dal (United) spokesperson Rajeev Ranjan Prasad described the achievement as particularly significant in a nation as diverse as India.

“It is a huge achievement in a country like India which has a population that speaks diverse languages and practices different religions,” Prasad said.

Modi’s tenure has witnessed major developments in infrastructure, digital governance, manufacturing, financial inclusion, defense modernization, and India’s growing role in global affairs. His government has also overseen India’s emergence as one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies.

The milestone places Modi in a unique position in India’s democratic history, reflecting sustained electoral success across three consecutive general elections and a level of political continuity rarely seen in the country’s post-independence era.

As June 10 approaches, the occasion is expected to be marked by celebrations and public events across the country, highlighting a leadership tenure that has become one of the most consequential and enduring in modern India. (Source: IANS)
